Astros Top Red Sox 6‑4 Behind Correa’s Three-Run Blast

HOUSTON (Interstat) — In a game that swung on one decisive swing, Carlos Correa’s three-run homer in the fifth inning propelled the Houston Astros to a 6-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon at Daikin Park, completing a three-game series sweep.

The most important part of the game arrived in the bottom of the fifth with the Astros trailing 2-1. After singles by Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with two outs, Correa stepped in against Boston starter Garrett Crochet. On a 1-1 count, Correa connected, driving a line drive over the left-field wall for his first home run of the season, turning a one-run deficit into a 5-2 Houston lead. The blast provided all the necessary cushion for the Astros’ bullpen to secure the win.

A crowd of 25,272 watched as the Astros (5-2) continued their strong early-season form, while the Red Sox (1-5) dropped their fourth consecutive game. The contest, which lasted 2 hours and 35 minutes, saw the total score of 10 runs fall under the pregame over/under line of 7.5.

Boston struck first, manufacturing a run in the opening inning. Jarren Duran led off with a single, advanced to second on a walk, and scored on Willson Contreras’ RBI single to center. The Red Sox added another in the second without the benefit of a hit. Isiah Kiner-Falefa reached on a fielder’s choice, took third on a Connor Wong double, and scored on a Jarren Duran groundout, giving Boston an early 2-0 advantage.

Houston answered immediately in the home half of the first against Crochet. Yordan Alvarez laced a double and scored on Isaac Paredes’ double to center. A fielding error by Boston shortstop Trevor Story extended the inning, and Christian Walker capitalized with a sharp RBI single to left, tying the game at 2-2.

The game settled into a pitchers’ duel until the fateful fifth. Crochet, who took the loss to fall to 1-1, was charged with four earned runs on six hits over five innings, striking out seven. His counterpart, Astros starter Mike Burrows, earned the win to improve to 1-1. Burrows delivered five solid innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out six, a marked improvement from his first start of the season.

Houston added an insurance run in the seventh when catcher Christian Vázquez led off the inning with a solo home run to left-center off Boston reliever Garrett Whitlock, extending the lead to 6-2.

Boston mounted a late rally against the Houston bullpen. Wilyer Abreu launched a solo homer, his third of the year, off Bryan King in the eighth inning to make it 6-3. In the ninth, pinch-hitter Roman Anthony led off against Astros closer Bryan Abreu with a line-drive homer to left-center, cutting the deficit to two. Abreu recovered, however, striking out the next three batters—Marcelo Mayer, Jarren Duran, and Trevor Story—to seal the victory and earn his first save of the season.

The Astros’ relief corps was dominant outside of the two solo shots. Bryan King, AJ Blubaugh, and Bryan Abreu combined for four innings, allowing just two hits—both home runs—while striking out six. For Boston, relievers Greg Weissert and Garrett Whitlock each threw a scoreless inning.

Offensively, the Astros managed eight hits, led by multi-hit games from Alvarez and Walker. Boston collected seven hits, with Abreu’s 2-for-4, one-home run performance leading the way. The Red Sox continued to struggle with runners on base, going 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and leaving five men on.

The victory extended Houston’s winning streak to three games, following their back-to-back routs of Boston to open the series. The Red Sox, meanwhile, have lost five of their first six games to begin the 2026 campaign. The series sweep reinforces Houston’s early dominance in the season series.

Boston now returns home to Fenway Park to begin a six-game homestand, opening a three-game series against the San Diego Padres on Friday. The Astros head west to open a six-game road trip, starting with a three-game set against the Athletics on Friday.
