Giants Pound Padres 9‑3 Behind Webb, Adames

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Willy Adames launched the game’s first pitch into the left field seats and the San Francisco Giants never looked back, pounding the San Diego Padres 9-3 on Tuesday night at PETCO Park to even their season series.

The Giants’ offense, which had mustered just six total runs in its first four games, erupted for 16 hits, with Adames and Jung Hoo Lee leading a relentless attack. Adames finished 4-for-5 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and three runs scored, while Lee drove in three runs on three hits.

San Francisco’s three-run first inning set an immediate tone against Padres starter Germán Márquez. Following Adames’ leadoff homer, Matt Chapman singled and later scored on Lee’s two-run double. Chapman added a solo homer in the third to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Padres briefly responded in their half of the third, stringing together three runs on a Jackson Merrill RBI single and run-scoring groundouts from Xander Bogaerts and Miguel Andujar to cut the deficit to 4-3. That rally, however, proved to be the entirety of San Diego’s offense.

Giants starter Logan Webb settled in after the third, retiring the final 10 batters he faced. Webb earned the win, allowing three runs on three hits over six innings, walking two and striking out five. The Giants’ bullpen, with scoreless outings from JT Brubaker and José Buttó, sealed the victory.

The game’s decisive moment came in the top of the sixth inning, when the Giants broke it open with four runs to quash any Padres momentum. Harrison Bader doubled and Patrick Bailey walked to set the table. After a strikeout, Adames delivered an RBI single, followed by an infield single from Rafael Devers to load the bases. Heliot Ramos then cleared them with a two-run single, and Luis Arraez added a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 8-3.

San Francisco tacked on a final run in the ninth on an RBI single from Lee.

Márquez took the loss for San Diego, surrendering seven runs on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings. The Padres’ bullpen provided some relief, with Bradgley Rodriguez, Jeremiah Estrada and David Morgan combining for 3 2/3 innings of one-run ball, but the early damage was too severe.

The Giants’ offensive outburst was a stark reversal from their early-season struggles and defied pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 5-4 Padres victory, giving San Diego a 59% probability to win.

With the victory, San Francisco improved to 2-3 on the young season, while San Diego fell to 1-4. The two teams conclude their three-game series on Wednesday.
