Dodgers Rally Late, Complete Sweep of Diamondbacks
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Will Smith’s two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning erased a one-run deficit and propelled the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night at Dodger Stadium, completing a three-game season-opening sweep.
A crowd of 53,340 watched the Dodgers remain perfect at 3-0, while the Diamondbacks fell to 0-3, their third consecutive one-run loss to their National League West rivals to start the 2026 campaign.
The most important part of the game arrived with two outs in the eighth. After Dodgers closer Edwin Díaz worked a scoreless top of the inning, Arizona reliever Juan Morillo retired the first two batters in the bottom half. But Mookie Betts worked a walk to bring Smith to the plate. On a 1-1 offering, the Dodgers catcher launched a towering drive to center field, a two-run shot that instantly turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead and sent the stadium into a frenzy. Díaz returned for the ninth and retired the side in order to seal the comeback win and earn his second save.
The game was a classic pitchers’ duel for much of the evening. Arizona left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez delivered a stellar performance, scattering four hits over five scoreless innings while striking out five. He worked out of jams in the third and fifth, inducing inning-ending double plays to squash potential Dodgers rallies.
His counterpart, Dodgers ace Tyler Glasnow, was nearly as sharp. The right-hander, tabbed as the Dodgers’ top star of the game, allowed two runs on four hits over six innings, striking out six. The Diamondbacks nicked him early, using a challenged infield single by Corbin Carroll and an RBI single from Pavin Smith to score in the first. They added another in the third on a Jorge Barrosa leadoff double and a sacrifice fly from Carroll.
The Dodgers, stifled by Rodriguez and relievers Jonathan Loáisiga and Joe Ross, finally broke through in the sixth against Arizona’s bullpen. Kyle Tucker reached on an error by first baseman Carlos Santana and later scored on an RBI double from Freddie Freeman, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Los Angeles’ bullpen trio of Alex Vesia, Will Klein and Díaz was flawless. Vesia and Klein (1-0) each pitched a perfect inning, with Klein earning the win after Smith’s homer in the eighth. Morillo (0-1) took the loss for Arizona, charged with the two runs on Smith’s decisive blast.
The result continued the early-season trends for both clubs. The Dodgers have now won all three games against Arizona this season by a combined margin of five runs. The Diamondbacks, meanwhile, have struggled to close out games, having led in all three contests of the series.
Offensively, the Dodgers managed six hits, with Freeman’s 3-for-4, one-RBI performance leading the way. The Diamondbacks collected five hits, with Barrosa’s double representing their only extra-base hit.
The game defied several pregame projections. The final score of 5 total runs went well under the over/under line of 8.5, though the Dodgers did cover the -1.5 spread with their late rally. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 2-1 Dodgers win, and its ELO system gave Los Angeles a 67 percent probability of victory, both of which ultimately proved correct.
Arizona will look to secure its first win of the season when it returns home to open a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers on Monday. The Dodgers, riding high on their sweep, will also be at home Monday to begin a three-game set with the Cleveland Guardians.
