Marlins Edge Rockies in Late Inning to Remain Undefeated

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Interstat) — Owen Caissie delivered a go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning, lifting the Miami Marlins to a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday afternoon at loanDepot Park.

The win gave the Marlins a 2-0 start to the season, while the Rockies fell to 0-2.

Caissie’s clutch hit capped a back-and-forth contest that saw Miami overcome an early deficit. With the score tied 3-3, Otto Lopez led off the Marlins’ eighth with a single against Rockies reliever Jaden Hill. Lopez promptly stole second base and scored without a throw when Caissie lined a 1-1 pitch into center field.

Calvin Faucher earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief. Pete Fairbanks followed with a perfect ninth for his second save. Hill took the loss.

The game was a duel of early-season resilience. Colorado struck first in the second inning when TJ Rumfield launched a solo home run to right-center field off Marlins starter Eury Pérez. The Rockies doubled their lead in the fourth when Ezequiel Tovar followed a Willi Castro single with a two-run homer to left-center, making it 3-0.

Pérez, however, settled in brilliantly after Tovar’s blast. The young right-hander finished with seven strong innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out eight. His ability to work deep into the game kept Miami’s bullpen fresh for the late innings.

Miami began chipping away in the third. Xavier Edwards and Agustin Ramirez hit consecutive singles, and Liam Hicks brought Edwards home with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 3-1.

The Marlins then erased the Rockies’ lead entirely in the fifth. After Ramirez singled with one out, Hicks connected on a two-run homer to right field off Colorado starter Michael Lorenzen, knotting the score at 3-3. Lorenzen was charged with three runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings.

Both bullpens held firm until the eighth. Zach Agnos provided 1 1/3 hitless innings of relief for Colorado, striking out two. Faucher worked around a one-out single in the top of the eighth to keep the tie intact, setting the stage for Miami’s decisive rally.

Hill entered for Colorado in the bottom of the inning and gave up the single to Lopez, who had been hitless on the season. Lopez’s steal and Caissie’s subsequent single handed Miami its first lead of the night.

Fairbanks then shut the door in the ninth, retiring the Rockies in order on a popout and two flyouts to seal the victory.

The Marlins out-hit the Rockies 10-6. Caissie led the way with three hits, while Ramirez added two singles and a walk. Hicks finished with a homer and three RBIs. For Colorado, Tovar’s two-run shot represented the bulk of their offense.

Attendance was 10,160. The game time was 2 hours, 34 minutes.

The two teams conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon. The Rockies will then travel to Toronto for a three-game set beginning Monday, while the Marlins will host the Chicago White Sox for three games starting Monday.
