Lewis Homer Lifts Twins Past Orioles
BALTIMORE (Interstat) — Royce Lewis launched a tiebreaking two-run homer in the fifth inning, and the Minnesota Twins’ bullpen delivered five and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief in a 4-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday evening at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
A crowd of 26,057 watched the Twins even their early season record at 1-1, handing new manager Derek Shelton his first win after a 2-1 loss in Thursday’s opener. The Orioles also moved to 1-1.
The game turned on a single swing from Lewis. With the score tied 1-1 in the fifth, Trevor Larnach worked a leadoff walk from Orioles starter Kyle Bradish. Lewis then drove a 1-1 pitch from Bradish just inside the left-field foul pole for his first home run of the season, giving Minnesota a 3-1 lead it would not relinquish.
That blast made a winner of the Twins’ relief corps. Starter Taj Bradley set a dominant tone, striking out nine over four and one-third innings. He allowed one run on three hits but was pulled after 89 pitches with one out in the fifth. The lone blemish against him came in the second inning when Colton Cowser doubled and scored on an RBI single from Jeremiah Jackson.
From there, five Minnesota relievers combined to allow just two hits over the final four and two-thirds frames. Anthony Banda (1-0) earned the win by recording the final two outs of the fifth inning, both via strikeout, after inheriting two baserunners. Justin Topa, Eric Orze and Cole Sands followed with perfect sixth, seventh and eighth innings, respectively. Sands returned for the ninth to notch his first save, striking out two around a walk.
The Twins added an insurance run in the seventh against reliever Yennier Cano. Lewis walked, stole second and scored on a sharp RBI single by Kody Clemens.
Bradish (0-1) took the loss for Baltimore, charged with two runs on two hits over four and two-thirds innings. He walked three and struck out four. The Orioles’ offense, which managed only five hits, squandered early opportunities, stranding the bases loaded in the first inning and leaving two more on in the sixth.
Minnesota had tied the game in the fourth. Byron Buxton led off with an infield single that was confirmed after a Twins challenge. He advanced to second on a flyout, took third on a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Bell.
The game time was 2 hours, 57 minutes. The teams conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon.
Key Performances: For the Twins, Bradley’s nine-strikeout effort was pivotal, while Lewis provided the decisive offensive blow. The bullpen quartet of Banda, Topa, Orze and Sands was flawless. For the Orioles, Bradish was solid in defeat, and Anthony Nunez provided two perfect innings of relief with three strikeouts.
Context: The victory marked a successful rebound for Minnesota after dropping the season opener. The result defied pregame projections, as Baltimore was a -1.5 favorite and had a 58.4% probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system. The combined five runs fell well under the over/under line of 7.5.
Up Next: The series finale is set for Sunday. The Twins then travel to Kansas City for a three-game set starting Monday. The Orioles will host the Texas Rangers for three games beginning Monday.
