Fried Dominates as Yankees Blank Giants in Season Opener
SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — On a cool, clear Wednesday evening at Oracle Park, the New York Yankees opened their 2026 season with a statement of dominance, silencing a crowd of 40,856 with a methodical 7-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants. The game, played in a brisk 2 hours and 27 minutes, was defined by a commanding five-run outburst in the second inning and a masterful combined shutout from the Yankees’ pitching staff.
The most important part of the game arrived swiftly and decisively in the top of the second inning, turning a scoreless duel into a commanding Yankees lead from which the Giants never recovered. Facing Giants ace Logan Webb, the Yankees’ offense ignited with a two-out rally that showcased both patience and power. After Giancarlo Stanton singled and Jazz Chisholm Jr. was hit by a pitch, José Caballero laced a sharp line drive to left field, scoring Stanton. Ryan McMahon followed with a single to center that plated both Chisholm and Caballero. Austin Wells kept the line moving with another single, setting the stage for Trent Grisham. The Yankees center fielder then delivered the crushing blow, launching a triple to deep right field that cleared the bases, scoring McMahon and Wells. In a span of five batters, the Yankees transformed a quiet night into a 5-0 rout, effectively deciding the contest before many fans had settled into their seats.
That early explosion provided more than enough support for Yankees starter Max Fried, who was the top star of the game. The left-hander delivered 6 1/3 innings of impeccable work, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out four. He faced minimal trouble, with the Giants only advancing a runner to third base once against him. Fried efficiently dismantled the San Francisco lineup, inducing weak contact and never allowing a rally to materialize.
The Yankees added two insurance runs in the fifth inning to seal the victory. Cody Bellinger and Ben Rice led off with back-to-back singles, and Stanton drove in Bellinger with another single. Rice later scored on a fielder’s choice and a throwing error by Giants shortstop Willy Adames, pushing the lead to 7-0.
While Webb labored through five innings, surrendering nine hits and six earned runs while striking out seven, the Giants’ bullpen provided a silver lining. JT Brubaker, Caleb Kilian and Keaton Winn combined for four perfect innings of relief, striking out five Yankees batters. However, the damage inflicted on Webb was insurmountable given the Giants’ anemic offensive performance.
San Francisco managed only three singles — by Rafael Devers in the first, Heliot Ramos in the fourth, and Luis Arraez in the eighth — and never seriously threatened to score. The Giants’ best chance came in the eighth inning when Arraez singled and Matt Chapman walked with two outs, but Devers flew out to center to end the minor threat. They also put a runner on third in the ninth following an error, but could not capitalize.
The Yankees’ bullpen preserved the shutout with authority. Jake Bird stranded a runner in the seventh, Brent Headrick worked a scoreless eighth, and Camilo Doval pitched a clean ninth to close out the combined three-hitter.
Offensively, the Yankees tallied 10 hits, with Stanton, Wells, and McMahon each collecting two. Grisham’s two-RBI triple was the biggest hit of the night, while Caballero and McMahon also drove in runs.
The victory gave the Yankees a 1-0 start to the season, while the Giants fell to 0-1. Fried earned the win, while Webb was tagged with the loss. The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, which had simulated a narrow 2-1 Yankees victory and gave New York a 64.8% probability to win. The Yankees also covered the spread of -1.5, and the total score of seven runs went under the over/under line of 6.5.
The two teams will continue their opening series at Oracle Park on Friday, March 27. The Yankees will then travel to Seattle for a three-game set starting Monday, March 30, before returning home to face the Miami Marlins. The Giants will host the Yankees for two more games before embarking on a road trip to San Diego on Monday, March 30, followed by a homestand against the New York Mets.
