Cleveland Guardians at Minnesota Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — Logan Allen dominated over eight shutout innings and Steven Kwan drove in four runs as the Cleveland Guardians blanked the Minnesota Twins 8-0 on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader at Target Field.

Allen (9-11) was in complete control, scattering four hits while striking out seven and walking one. The left-hander efficiently worked his way through the Twins’ lineup, needing just 77 pitches to get through eight frames before giving way to Zak Kent, who struck out two in a perfect ninth to seal the combined shutout.

The game was a pitchers’ duel through four innings, with Cleveland’s Bailey Ober and Minnesota’s Mick Abel keeping the game scoreless. Ober (5-9) took the loss, but it was a disastrous fifth inning that doomed him and the Twins.

The Guardians sent 11 men to the plate in the fifth, erupting for six runs on seven hits to break the game open. The inning started with back-to-back singles from Brayan Rocchio and Petey Halpin. After a sacrifice bunt, Kwan delivered a two-run single to center to open the scoring. José Ramírez followed with a single, and Kyle Manzardo drove in another run with a single to right. Gabriel Arias then cleared the bases with a two-run double, and C.J. Kayfus capped the explosive inning with an RBI single to score Arias.

Cleveland added two more runs in the eighth off reliever Mick Abel. After three walks loaded the bases, Kwan again came through, lining a two-run single to center to bring his RBI total to four.

The Guardians finished with nine hits, with Kwan, Arias, and Kayfus each recording multi-RBI games. Arias went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Kayfus was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Twins managed only four hits and grounded into two double plays, squandering any potential rallies. Royce Lewis had Minnesota’s only extra-base hit, a double in the seventh inning.

Abel was a bright spot for Minnesota in relief, striking out six over four innings while allowing two runs on one hit.

The game took just 2 hours and 12 minutes to complete in front of an announced crowd of 23,242.

With the win, Cleveland improved to 84-71 on the season, while Minnesota fell to 66-89. The two teams were set to meet again immediately for the second game of the twin bill.
