Kansas City Royals at Oakland Athletics

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — Shea Langeliers lined a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday night, lifting the Athletics to a 4-3 comeback victory over the Kansas City Royals at Sutter Health Park.

The Athletics, who erased an early three-run deficit, won it against Royals reliever Luinder Avila. With one out, Darell Hernaiz singled to center. Brett Harris then grounded into a fielder’s choice, forcing Hernaiz out at second base. Langeliers followed by driving a 1-2 pitch from Avila to deep center field, scoring pinch-runner Max Schuemann from first base to secure the win before a crowd of 10,543.

The loss dropped Kansas City to an even 80-80 on the season, while improved to 76-84.

The game was a pitcher’s duel for the first three innings before the Royals broke through in the fourth against Athletics starter Mason Barnett. Maikel Garcia singled and Carter Jensen followed with another single to put runners on the corners with two outs. Jonathan India then launched a three-run home run, his ninth of the season, to left field to give Kansas City a 3-0 lead.

That advantage was short-lived as the Athletics answered with a three-run fifth inning against Royals starter Noah Cameron. After a single by Langeliers and a walk to Brent Rooker loaded the bases, Jacob Wilson cleared them with a double down the left-field line, tying the game at 3-3.

From there, the bullpens took over. Hogan Harris provided two perfect innings of relief for Oakland, striking out two. For Kansas City, Taylor Clarke, Angel Zerpa and Jonathan Bowlan combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings before Avila entered for the ninth.

Justin Sterner earned the win for Oakland, his fourth of the season, by recording the final four outs, including two strikeouts. Avila was charged with the loss, falling to 1-1.

Barnett finished with a solid outing for the Athletics, allowing three runs on three hits over 5 2/3 innings, striking out three. Cameron went 4 2/3 innings for the Royals, giving up three runs on four hits while striking out six.

The Royals managed only four hits total, with India’s homer accounting for all their runs. The Athletics collected eight hits, with Langeliers and Hernaiz each recording two.

The game-time was 2 hours, 35 minutes.

The two teams continue their three-game series Saturday. Kansas City will look to get back to a winning record, while aims to build on the late-inning victory. The result defied pregame projections, which had favored the Royals, and the combined seven total runs fell well under the expected over/under line of 10.
