Royals Fall to Athletics on Walk-Off Double in Ninth Inning

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — Shea Langeliers lined a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday night, lifting the Athletics to a 4-3 comeback victory over the Kansas City Royals at Sutter Health Park.

In a game defined by a pitchers’ duel that belied the pregame projections, the Athletics rallied from a three-run deficit to snap the Royals’ modest two-game winning streak before a crowd of 10,543.

The contest was a stark contrast to the offensive showdown predicted by Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 7-5 final. Instead, the teams combined for just 12 hits and the total of seven runs fell well under the over/under line of 10, despite Kansas City having been installed as a -1.5 run favorite.

The game’s only significant offense was confined to two half-innings. For the first three frames, Royals starter Noah Cameron and Athletics starter Mason Barnett traded zeroes, with Cameron striking out six.

The silence was broken decisively in the top of the fourth. After Maikel Garcia and Carter Jensen hit back-to-back singles with one out, Jonathan India stepped to the plate. India connected on a Barnett offering, sending a three-run home run, his ninth of the season, over the left-field fence to give Kansas City a 3-0 lead.

The advantage was short-lived. answered with a rally of its own in the bottom of the fifth against Cameron. Shea Langeliers started the inning with a single, and after a lineout, walks to Brent Rooker and Tyler Soderstrom loaded the bases. Shortstop Jacob Wilson then cleared them, lacing a double down the left-field line that scored all three runners to knot the game at 3-3.

From that point, the game transformed into a bullpen battle. Hogan Harris provided two perfect innings of relief for Oakland, striking out two. For Kansas City, Taylor Clarke, Angel Zerpa and Jonathan Bowlan combined for 3 1/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit ball to keep the game tied.

The Royals threatened briefly in the top of the eighth when Bobby Witt Jr. singled with two outs against Justin Sterner, but he was left stranded.

Sterner returned for the ninth and set down the Royals in order, setting the stage for the dramatic finish. Luinder Avila, who took over for Bowlan to start the inning, struck out Lawrence Butler for the first out. Darell Hernaiz then singled sharply to center, bringing Max Schuemann into the game as a pinch-runner. Brett Harris followed by grounding into a fielder’s choice, erasing Schuemann at second base.

With two outs and Harris on first, Langeliers came to the plate. On a 1-1 count, he drove Avila’s pitch to deep center field, scoring Harris from first base to secure the Athletics’ victory.

The win went to Sterner, who improved to 4-3 on the season after recording four outs without allowing a run. Avila was charged with the loss, falling to 1-1.

Offensively, the Athletics managed eight hits, with Langeliers leading the way by going 2 for 5 with the game-winning RBI. Wilson’s three-run double was the key hit of the game. The Royals were held to just four hits, with India’s three-run homer accounting for all of their scoring.

With the result, the Royals’ record evened at 80-80. The Athletics improved to 76-84. The two teams are scheduled to continue their three-game series Saturday and Sunday to conclude the regular season.

The victory gave a measure of revenge after Kansas City took two of three games when the teams met in Missouri back in June. The Royals had won their previous two games against the Los Angeles Angels before arriving in West Sacramento, while the Athletics were coming off a loss to the Houston Astros on Thursday after winning their previous two games.
