Oakland Athletics at Pittsburgh Pirates
PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — Lawrence Butler hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the fifth inning, Nick Kurtz added a solo shot and the Athletics held on to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Friday night.
The Pirates jumped on Athletics starter Luis Severino early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Jared Triolo reached on a throwing error by third baseman Darell Hernaiz, and Spencer Horwitz followed with an RBI double. Bryan Reynolds and Andrew McCutchen added run-scoring singles to give Pittsburgh a quick 3-0 lead.
Pirates starter Mitch Keller was perfect through the first three innings, but Kurtz, a native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, broke up the no-hit bid and shutout with a two-out solo homer to right field in the fourth. It was the 33rd homer for Kurtz, who tied Jose Canseco (1986) for the second-most home runs by an A’s rookie. Mark McGwire hit 49 in 1987.
Oakland completed the comeback an inning later. Carlos Cortes singled and Zack Gelof walked to set the table for Butler, who launched a three-run blast to right-center field to put the Athletics ahead 4-3.
Severino (7-11) settled in after the rocky first inning to earn the win. He allowed three runs, one earned, on seven hits over five innings, striking out three. The Athletics bullpen combined for four scoreless innings of relief, with Michael Kelly working the ninth for his second save.
Despite the loss, Pittsburgh outhit 10-4. Keller (6-15) took the loss, surrendering all four runs on four hits in five innings of work. He walked one and struck out four.
The Pirates threatened in the ninth when pinch-hitter Rafael Flores led off with a double. After a groundout advanced the runner to third, Kelly walked McCutchen but then induced a game-ending 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Tommy Pham.
The game took 2 hours, 31 minutes and was played in front of 20,584 fans at PNC Park.
With the win, improved to 73-81 on the season, while Pittsburgh fell to 65-89. The two teams are scheduled to continue their three-game series on Saturday.
