Astros cap season with power display to top Angels

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Interstat) — Ramón Urías hit a two-run homer in a four-run fifth inning, one of four Houston home runs, and the Astros beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-2 on Sunday evening in the season finale for both teams.

The Astros, who failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2016, finished their campaign with a record of 87 wins and 75 losses. The Angels concluded their season at 72-90.

A crowd of 30,609 at Angel Stadium watched as the Astros’ offense erupted in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie. The game lasted 2 hours, 43 minutes.

Houston struck first in the opening inning. Mauricio Dubón singled and Victor Caratini was hit by a pitch before Yainer Diaz delivered an RBI single to center field.

The Angels answered immediately in the bottom of the first when Mike Trout launched his 26th home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center field off Astros starter Colton Gordon.

The game remained tied until the Astros’ explosive fifth inning against Angels starter Sam Aldegheri. Yainer Diaz led off the frame with his 20th home of the year, a solo blast to left-center that gave Houston the lead for good.

Jesús Sánchez followed with a single and Cam Smith doubled, setting the stage for Urías, who hammered a two-run homer to left field. Two batters later, Brice Matthews capped the power display with a solo home run to left-center, his fourth of the season.

Houston added one more run in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Victor Caratini, his 12th of the year.

The Angels mounted a threat in the bottom of the ninth against reliever Lance McCullers Jr., scoring one run on an RBI single by Carter Kieboom that plated Jo Adell. With the bases loaded and one out, McCullers struck out Denzer Guzman and got Taylor Ward looking to end the game.

The victory went to Colton Gordon, who earned his sixth win of the season against four losses. Gordon pitched five strong innings, allowing just one run on no hits. He walked three and struck out three. The lone run against him was Trout’s first-inning homer.

Lance McCullers Jr. worked the final four innings to secure the win, allowing one run on two hits while striking out four.

The loss was charged to Sam Aldegheri, who fell to 0-2 on the season. He was chased during the Astros’ fifth-inning rally, ultimately charged with four runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out five.

Offensively, the Astros out-hit the Angels 11 to 6. Brice Matthews, Yainer Diaz, and Mauricio Dubón each had two hits for Houston. For the Angels, Mike Trout’s first-inning home run was a highlight in what was a quiet afternoon for the Los Angeles offense until the ninth-inning rally.

The game concluded the 2025 season for both American League West clubs. The Astros won the final series against the Angels two games to one.
