St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs
CHICAGO (Interstat) — Seiya Suzuki homered in his fourth consecutive game and the Chicago Cubs completed a three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals with a 2-0 victory Sunday at Wrigley Field to close the regular season.
The win secured the Cubs (92-70) as the top National League wild card, setting up a first-round playoff series at home against the San Diego Padres beginning Tuesday. The Cardinals finished their season 78-84.
In a game dominated by pitching, Suzuki provided the decisive blow, launching a solo home run to left field off St. Louis reliever John King in the fifth inning. It was his 32nd homer of the year and capped a torrid final stretch where he hit five home runs and drove in 10 runs over his last four games, finishing the season with a team-leading 103 RBIs.
The Cubs added an insurance run in the seventh. Kevin Alcántara led off with a single and later scored on a line-drive single to center field by Moises Ballesteros.
Cubs starter Javier Assad (4-1) earned the win, pitching 5 1/3 shutout innings. He allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out six. Jordan Wicks recorded the save, his first of the season, by throwing three scoreless innings of relief, allowing three hits and striking out four.
John King (2-1) took the loss for St. Louis, surrendering one run on two hits over 1 2/3 innings.
The Cardinals threatened in the ninth when Thomas Saggese singled and advanced to second on a fielding error by left fielder Kevin Alcántara. But Wicks struck out Jordan Walker and Jimmy Crooks to end the game, stranding the tying run at the plate.
Both teams finished with six hits. Victor Scott II went 2 for 3 with a double for the Cardinals, who were swept in the final series and lost their last six meetings with the Cubs.
The game was played in 2 hours, 2 minutes before an announced crowd of 37,497.
