Pittsburgh Pirates at Atlanta Braves
SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. (Interstat) — Ronald Acuña Jr. hit a two-run home run in the first inning and the Atlanta Braves closed their season with a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday evening at Truist Park.
In a game that saw both teams record six hits, the Braves’ early offense and a strong bullpen performance proved decisive in front of a crowd of 35,827. The game took 2 hours, 25 minutes.
Acuña’s 21st homer, a 451-foot shot to center field off Pirates starter Johan Oviedo, scored Matt Olson and gave Atlanta a lead it would not relinquish. Oviedo (2-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out three.
The Pirates’ lone run came in the sixth inning. Bryan Reynolds doubled and scored on a line-drive single by Joey Bart, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Atlanta extended its lead with two runs in the eighth. Nick Allen doubled and scored on Olson’s RBI single. Olson later scored on a throwing error by Pirates shortstop Jared Triolo on a ground ball, providing the final margin.
The Braves employed a bullpen game, with Charlie Morton making a potential final major league appearance as the opener. Morton pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out one.
Chris Sale (7-5) earned the win in relief, working 5 2/3 innings and allowing one run on four hits. He struck out nine and walked five. Raisel Iglesias pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 29th save of the season.
The loss dropped Pittsburgh to 71-91 to finish the year, while Atlanta ended its campaign at 76-86. The Braves won the season series against the Pirates, taking two of three games this weekend after Pittsburgh had won the first two games of the series.
