St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs

CHICAGO (Interstat) — Michael Busch homered twice and drove in four runs, and the Chicago Cubs clinched the top National League wild card with a 7-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday evening at Wrigley Field.

Jameson Taillon pitched six effective innings for the win, and Pete Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki also homered for the Cubs (91-70), who secured home-field advantage for the first round of the playoffs. They will host the San Diego Padres in Game 1 of the best-of-three series on Tuesday.

The Cardinals (78-83) saw their late-season struggles continue, dropping their second straight in the season-ending series.

A crowd of 38,035 watched the Cubs take control of the game after a back-and-forth start. Busch gave Chicago an immediate lead, launching a solo home run to right-center field off Cardinals starter Michael McGreevy in the bottom of the first inning.

St. Louis answered in the fourth when Nolan Arenado tied the game with a solo shot of his own, his 12th of the season.

The game turned decisively in the fifth. After Matt Shaw reached on a fielder’s choice, Busch struck again, crushing his second homer of the game and 34th of the year to left-center field, putting the Cubs ahead 3-1.

Chicago added to its lead in the sixth when Suzuki led off the inning with his 31st home run, making it 4-1.

The Cardinals mounted a brief challenge in the seventh. After two quick outs, Jimmy Crooks singled and Jordan Walker followed with a two-run homer to center field, pulling St. Louis within a run.

The Cubs responded immediately in the bottom of the frame. Shaw walked and Busch tripled him home, restoring a two-run cushion. Chicago then put the game out of reach in the eighth. After Suzuki walked, Crow-Armstrong connected for a two-run homer to right field, his 31st, for the final 7-3 margin.

Taillon (11-7) earned the victory, allowing one run on three hits while striking out eight over six strong innings. Drew Pomeranz contributed a scoreless inning of relief.

McGreevy (8-4) took the loss for St. Louis, surrendering three runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Busch finished a perfect 4 for 4 with the two homers, a double, a triple and four RBIs. Walker led the Cardinals’ offense, going 1 for 2 with the two-run homer.

The game-time temperature was 68 degrees, and the contest took 2 hours, 36 minutes to complete. The total score of 10 runs went under the betting line of 9.

The regular season concludes for both teams with a finale on Sunday.
