Chicago White Sox at Washington Nationals

WASHINGTON (Interstat) — James Wood hit a tiebreaking solo homer in a three-run seventh inning, and the Washington Nationals rallied to beat the Chicago White Sox 6-5 on Saturday afternoon at Nationals Park.

In a matchup of last-place teams playing out the final weekend of the season, the Nationals overcame an early four-run deficit to snap a two-game skid and improve to 66-95. The White Sox fell to 59-102.

Chicago’s Colson Montgomery and Brooks Baldwin hit back-to-back homers in a four-run fourth inning off Nationals starter Jake Irvin to stake the White Sox to a 4-0 lead. Montgomery’s two-run shot was his 21st of the season.

Washington answered immediately in the bottom of the fourth when Daylen Lile launched a two-run homer off White Sox starter Sean Burke, scoring Josh Bell to cut the deficit to 4-2.

The game remained tight until the decisive seventh. After Brady House flied out, Nasim Nuñez singled off White Sox reliever Brandon Eisert. Jacob Young then connected for a two-run homer, his second of the year, to tie the game at 5. Wood followed with his 31st home run of the season, a solo blast to center field that gave Washington its first lead of the afternoon at 6-5.

The Nationals added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI single by Wood that scored Luis García Jr., a run that proved critical.

Chicago mounted a threat in the ninth against Nationals closer Jose A. Ferrer. Edgar Quero and Lenyn Sosa singled, and Derek Hill drove in a run with a two-out single to make it 6-5. But Ferrer struck out Chase Meidroth swinging with the tying and go-ahead runs on base to end the game and secure his 11th save.

Julian Fernández earned the win for Washington with a perfect inning of relief, striking out two. Eisert took the loss for Chicago, allowing three runs on two hits in one-third of an inning.

Despite the loss, White Sox starter Sean Burke turned in a dominant performance, striking out 10 batters over 4 1/3 innings while allowing just two runs on three hits. Montgomery led Chicago’s 11-hit attack, going 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs.

For Washington, Wood finished 3 for 5 with two RBIs, while Young and Lile each drove in two runs with their homers. Irvin went six innings, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out six.

The game, played in 2 hours, 43 minutes, was attended by 24,360. The teams will conclude their three-game series and their respective seasons on Sunday.
