Pittsburgh Pirates at Atlanta Braves

ATLANTA (Interstat) — Bubba Chandler delivered a strong performance in his home state and the Pittsburgh Pirates used a two-run sixth inning to defeat the Atlanta Braves 3-1 on Saturday night at Truist Park.

Chandler, a right-hander from nearby Bogart, Georgia, allowed one run on four hits over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out six and did not issue a walk, improving his record to 4-1. The Pirates’ bullpen combined for 3 1/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief, with Dennis Santana striking out two in the ninth for his 16th save.

A crowd of 35,007 watched the game, which lasted 2 hours, 29 minutes.

The Braves struck first in the second inning. Drake Baldwin led off with a triple and scored on a sharp line-drive single to right field by Marcell Ozuna.

Pittsburgh tied the game in the third on Henry Davis’ seventh home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center field. The Pirates then took the lead for good in the sixth. Spencer Horwitz singled and scored on Nick Gonzales’ RBI double. After a walk to Joey Bart, Jack Suwinski followed with an RBI single that deflected off shortstop Ha-Seong Kim, allowing Gonzales to cross the plate.

The Pirates out-hit the Braves 10-5 but grounded into two double plays, which stifled potential rallies.

Spencer Strider took the loss for Atlanta, falling to 7-14. He surrendered three runs on eight hits over six innings, walking one and striking out five. Baldwin was a bright spot for the Braves’ offense, going 2 for 4 with a double and a triple.

The win improved the Pirates to 72-90, while the Braves fell to 76-86. The result defied pregame projections, as Interstat’s game simulator had predicted a 7-4 Atlanta victory and its ELO system gave the Braves a 58.8 percent probability to win. The combined four runs went well under the posted over/under line of 8.5.

The two teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday.
