Giants Power Past Rockies Behind Adames, Ramos to Clinch .500 Season
SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — Willy Adames and Heliot Ramos hit home runs, and Trevor McDonald struck out 10 batters in seven innings to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 6-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on Friday night at Oracle Park.
Adames opened the game with a two-run home run, his 29th of the season. With two games remaining, he is seeking to become the Giants’ first 30-home run hitter since Barry Bonds in 2004. Every other team in baseball has at least five individual 30-home run seasons since 2005. Ramos drove in three in the second inning, scoring Jung Hoo Lee and Grant McCray with his 21st home run of the year.
The victory improved the Giants’ record to 79-81, ensuring they will finish the season with a .500 record or better. The Rockies, meanwhile, saw their record fall to 43-117 in front of a crowd of 40,048.
McDonald was dominant for San Francisco, earning his first win of the season. He allowed three runs on five hits over seven innings, all of the damage coming on one swing in the fifth. His 10 strikeouts tied a season high and he did not issue a walk.
The Giants’ offense provided an early cushion against Colorado starter Germán Márquez, who took the loss to fall to 3-16. Adames set the tone immediately, following a walk to Rafael Devers in the first inning by launching a Márquez fastball into the left-field stands.
San Francisco broke the game open in the second. Lee led off with a triple and, after two outs were recorded, McCray worked a walk. Ramos then stepped up and crushed a three-run homer to left-center field, extending the lead to 5-0.
For the first four innings, McDonald was nearly untouchable, mixing his fastball and slider effectively to keep the Rockies’ hitters off balance. Colorado managed just two singles and struck out six times through the first four frames.
The Rockies finally broke through in the fifth. Brenton Doyle and Braxton Fulford hit back-to-back singles with one out. After Ryan Ritter struck out, shortstop Ezequiel Tovar connected on a 1-2 pitch from McDonald, sending a three-run home run deep to center field to cut the Giants’ lead to 5-3. It was Tovar’s ninth homer of the year and accounted for all of Colorado’s runs.
San Francisco responded immediately in the bottom of the inning to reclaim a three-run advantage. Adames was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a single by Matt Chapman and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bryce Eldridge, making it 6-3.
From there, the Giants’ bullpen shut the door. Joel Peguero worked a scoreless eighth inning, and Ryan Walker closed it out in the ninth, striking out two batters to record his 17th save of the season.
The Rockies threatened only once more after their fifth-inning rally. In the eighth, Tovar singled with one out. Hunter Goodman then hit a deep fly ball to center field that Lee misplayed into an error, but Tovar had to hold at second base to see if the ball would be caught. Peguero then struck out Blaine Crim to end the inning.
Lee had a strong night at the plate for the Giants, going 3 for 4 with a triple and a run scored. Tovar was the lone bright spot for the Rockies, finishing 2 for 4 with the three-run homer.
The loss was the fourth in a row for Colorado, which has struggled mightily throughout the season. The win allowed San Francisco to even its record after a up-and-down campaign. The result defied the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had predicted a 3-2 Rockies victory, though the Giants were heavy favorites according to the ELO system with a 72.3 percent win probability. The combined nine runs went over the pregame over/under line of 8.
The two teams will continue their three-game series to close the regular season on Saturday and Sunday at Oracle Park.
