Pittsburgh Pirates at Atlanta Braves

ATLANTA (Interstat) — Spencer Horwitz went 3 for 3 with two home runs and four RBIs, Tommy Pham added a two-run shot and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Atlanta Braves 9-3 on Friday night at Truist Park.

Horwitz was the catalyst for a Pirates offense that amassed 14 hits. His solo home run in the seventh inning extended Pittsburgh’s lead, and his three-run blast in the ninth put the game out of reach. Nick Gonzales, Bryan Reynolds, Nick Yorke and Henry Davis each had two hits for Pittsburgh.

The Braves took an early lead when Matt Olson led off the bottom of the first inning with his 29th home run of the season. Pittsburgh responded forcefully in the top of the second against Braves starter Joey Wentz (5-7). After Horwitz walked, Pham connected for a two-run homer, his 10th, to give the Pirates a lead they would not relinquish. The inning continued with an RBI single from Davis and a run-scoring single from Gonzales, staking Pittsburgh to a 4-1 advantage.

Pirates starter Mitch Keller navigated through early trouble, stranding the bases loaded in the third inning. He worked 3 2/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out six. Yohan Ramírez (3-3) recorded the final out of the fifth inning to earn the win.

Atlanta chipped away with a solo home run from Michael Harris II in the sixth inning, his 20th, to make it 4-2. After Horwitz’s solo shot in the top of the seventh made it 5-2, the Braves answered in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double by Drake Baldwin that scored Ronald Acuña Jr., who had three hits in the game.

The Pirates sealed the victory with a four-run ninth inning, highlighted by Horwitz’s second homer of the night. The rally started with a double from Jared Triolo, who scored on a single by Gonzales that was aided by a throwing error from Braves second baseman Nick Allen. Andrew McCutchen singled ahead of Horwitz’s decisive blast.

The Pittsburgh bullpen, consisting of Mike Burrows, Ramírez, Kyle Nicolas and Dennis Santana, combined for 5 1/3 innings of relief, allowing two runs on five hits. Dylan Dodd provided 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for Atlanta.

The game, played in front of a crowd of 34,500, lasted 2 hours, 53 minutes. The result defied pregame projections, as Interstat’s game simulator had forecast a 7-4 Braves victory, and Atlanta’s ELO system gave the home team a 59.90 percent probability to win. The combined 12 runs went over the pregame over/under line of 8.5.

With the win, Pittsburgh improved to 70-90 on the season, while Atlanta fell to 75-85. The two teams are scheduled to continue their three-game series on Saturday.
