Miami Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies
PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — Walker Buehler pitched five scoreless innings and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Miami Marlins 1-0 on Thursday night, a result that mathematically eliminated Miami from postseason contention.
In a stark contrast to the previous night’s offensive explosion, the Phillies managed just one run, which proved sufficient behind a dominant collective pitching effort. The lone score came on Alec Bohm’s first-inning groundout, plating Harrison Bader.
The victory improved the Phillies’ record to 94-65 as they prepare for the playoffs, having already secured a first-round bye. The Marlins fell to 77-82, their wild-card hopes extinguished in a quiet offensive performance that saw them strand multiple runners.
Buehler (10-7) earned the win, navigating around three hits and three walks while hitting a batter over his five frames. He struck out two. The Marlins’ best chance against him came in the third inning when they loaded the bases with two outs, but Liam Hicks popped out to second baseman Bryson Stott to end the threat.
Janson Junk (6-4) took the hard-luck loss for Miami, allowing one run on five hits over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out four.
The Phillies’ bullpen preserved the narrow lead with precision. Taijuan Walker delivered two hitless innings of relief, and Matt Strahm pitched a perfect eighth. After a rain delay that lasted one hour and one minute, 40-year-old David Robertson returned to the mound to work the ninth, allowing a single to Troy Johnston before inducing a game-ending lineout from Graham Pauley for his second save.
The game’s only run was manufactured quickly in the bottom of the first. Bader led off with a single, advanced to third on a Bryce Harper single that deflected off shortstop Otto Lopez, and then scored when Bohm grounded out to third base.
Miami’s offense, which mustered only five hits, repeatedly failed to capitalize on opportunities. They put leadoff runners on base in the first and sixth innings but could not advance them. In the sixth, after Xavier Edwards walked and Liam Hicks singled, Otto Lopez flied out and both Griffin Conine and Connor Norby struck out against reliever Taijuan Walker.
Bohm led the Phillies’ seven-hit attack, going 2 for 4 with the game’s only RBI. Stott also added two hits for Philadelphia.
The game, played in two hours and 32 minutes before an announced crowd of 36,265 at Citizens Bank Park, was a pitcher’s duel that defied pregame expectations. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a high-scoring affair with Miami winning 8-5, and the total score of 1 fell dramatically under the over/under line of 9.
The Marlins will continue their final series of the season when they host the New York Mets beginning Friday. The Phillies will also conclude their regular season at home with a three-game set against the Minnesota Twins starting Friday.
