Colorado Rockies at Seattle Mariners
SEATTLE (Interstat) — Luis Castillo delivered a dominant performance on the mound, and Cal Raleigh powered the offense with two home runs as the Seattle Mariners cruised to a 9-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night at T-Mobile Park.
Castillo was nearly untouchable over 7 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit — a solo home run — while striking out 10 batters. He walked one and improved his record to 11-8. The right-hander’s overpowering stuff set the tone, as the Rockies managed only two hits all night before a crowd of 42,883.
The Mariners’ offense provided more than enough support early, ambushing Rockies starter Tanner Gordon in the first inning. Raleigh launched his 59th home run of the season to right field to open the scoring. Two batters later, Julio Rodríguez connected for his 32nd homer, a solo shot to left field. Jorge Polanco capped the explosive inning with a line-drive homer to right, staking Seattle to a 3-0 lead before Castillo even took the mound.
Gordon, who fell to 6-8 with the loss, was chased in the second inning. After Dominic Canzone doubled and Victor Robles was hit by a pitch, Raleigh struck again, lacing a two-run double to right field to extend the lead to 5-0.
Colorado got on the board in the fourth inning when Blaine Crim hit a solo home run to center field off Castillo, accounting for the lone hit and earned run against the Mariners’ ace.
Seattle immediately answered in the bottom of the fourth. Robles scored on a sacrifice fly by Randy Arozarena after reaching on an error, and J.P. Crawford came home on an RBI single from Josh Naylor, pushing the advantage to 7-1.
The Mariners added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Eugenio Suárez hit his 48th homer of the year in the seventh, and Raleigh punctuated his stellar night by crushing his 60th home run deep to right field in the eighth.
Colorado scored a consolation run in the ninth against reliever Luke Jackson. Mickey Moniak doubled and later came home on a groundout by Hunter Goodman.
The win improved Seattle’s record to 89-69 as they continue a late-season push. The Rockies, owners of the worst record in baseball, fell to 43-115. Rockies reliever Antonio Senzatela provided a bright spot with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing three hits and striking out four.
The game-time temperature was 58 degrees, and the contest was played in 2 hours and 25 minutes. The teams are scheduled to conclude their four-game series on Thursday.
