Los Angeles Dodgers at Arizona Diamondbacks

PHOENIX (Interstat) — Adrian Del Castillo’s pinch-hit, two-run homer in the seventh inning sparked a comeback and Geraldo Perdomo delivered a walk-off single in the ninth, lifting the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night at Chase Field.

The Dodgers, who had been carried for six innings by a dominant Shohei Ohtani, saw their bullpen falter late as the Diamondbacks erased a four-run deficit in front of a crowd of 42,882.

Ohtani was masterful in a no-decision, pitching six scoreless innings while allowing just five hits and striking out eight. The Dodgers’ offense provided him with an early lead when Teoscar Hernández launched a solo home run, his 25th of the season, off Arizona starter Brandon Pfaadt in the second inning.

The game remained 1-0 until the sixth, when the Dodgers added two more runs. After Ohtani and Freddie Freeman worked walks, Hernández struck again, lining a triple to center field that cleared the bases and extended the lead to 3-0. Los Angeles added what seemed like a crucial insurance run in the top of the seventh when backup catcher Ben Rortvedt hit his first home run of the year, making it 4-0.

The momentum shifted dramatically in the bottom of the seventh against Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia. Ildemaro Vargas singled and later scored on a double by James McCann, putting the Diamondbacks on the board. Del Castillo then stepped to the plate as a pinch-hitter and connected for a game-tying, two-run homer to right field, knotting the score at 4-4.

Tanner Scott (1-4) took over for Los Angeles in the ninth and immediately ran into trouble. Vargas was hit by a pitch, Tim Tawa walked, and McCann moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Jorge Barrosa tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Vargas. Perdomo then ended the game, lining a single to left off Scott to score Tawa and secure the comeback win for Arizona.

Ryan Thompson (3-2) earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief for the Diamondbacks. The Arizona bullpen, including scoreless outings from Brandyn Garcia and Jalen Beeks, combined for three shutout innings after Pfaadt allowed three runs on four hits over six frames.

Hernández led the Dodgers’ offense, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a triple and three RBIs. The Dodgers managed only five hits as a team. The Diamondbacks collected nine hits, with Perdomo, McCann and Alek Thomas each recording two.

With the loss, the Dodgers fell to 88-69 on the season. The Diamondbacks improved to 80-77. The two teams are scheduled to continue their three-game series on Wednesday.
