Mets Rally Past Cubs 9‑7 on Alvarez’s Late Homer
CHICAGO (Interstat) — Francisco Alvarez hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning, and the New York Mets rallied from a five-run deficit to beat the Chicago Cubs 9-7 on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.
Francisco Lindor led off the game with a home run, but the Cubs responded with two runs in the first and three in the second to build a 6-1 lead. The Mets answered with a five-run fifth inning, capped by Brandon Nimmo’s three-run homer, to tie the game. After the Cubs tied it at 7 in the sixth, Alvarez’s blast off Caleb Thielbar (3-4) secured the win for the Mets, their largest comeback this season. Brooks Raley (3-0) earned the win and Edwin Díaz got his 27th save. The Mets (81-76) moved a game ahead of Cincinnati for the third wild card.
