Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays

TORONTO (Interstat) — Carlos Narváez hit a two-run double in the sixth inning, Nathaniel Lowe had two RBI singles and the Boston Red Sox beat the AL-leading Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 on Tuesday night.

The slumping Blue Jays had just three hits and lost for the fifth time in six games. Toronto began the day with a two-game lead over the Yankees in the AL East. New York closed to within a game after rallying to beat the White Sox 3-2.

Masataka Yoshida had two hits and scored a run as the Red Sox improved to 40-39 on the road. Boston’s season record is now 86-71, while Toronto fell to 90-67.

Boston opened the scoring in the second inning against Toronto starter Kevin Gausman. Yoshida led off with a double and later scored on Lowe’s first RBI single.

Toronto answered in the fourth. Nathan Lukes doubled and scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Andrés Giménez, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

The Red Sox broke the game open in the sixth. Romy Gonzalez doubled and scored on Lowe’s second run-scoring single. After a challenged play at the plate resulted in an out, Narváez delivered the key blow, a double to center field that scored two runs and extended Boston’s lead to 4-1.

Boston’s pitching staff combined to stifle the Blue Jays’ offense. Starter Lucas Giolito allowed one run on three hits over 4 2/3 innings. Justin Wilson (4-1) earned the win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Garrett Whitlock and Justin Slaten also pitched scoreless innings before Aroldis Chapman worked a perfect ninth for his 32nd save.

Gausman (10-11) took the loss, surrendering four runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out seven. The Toronto bullpen, including Mason Fluharty, Louis Varland and Tommy Nance, held Boston hitless over the final 3 1/3 innings.

The game, played before a crowd of 42,927 at Rogers Centre, took 2 hours, 52 minutes. The result defied pregame projections, as Interstat’s game simulator had predicted a 6-4 Toronto victory and gave the Blue Jays a 54.2% probability to win.

The two teams continue their three-game series Wednesday night in Toronto.
