Toronto Blue Jays at Kansas City Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Interstat) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Andres Gimenez drove in two runs apiece as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Kansas City Royals 8-5 Sunday and clinched a playoff berth.

Toronto is the first team in the American League to secure a spot in the playoffs, returning to the postseason for the first time since 2023, and improved its AL-best and AL East-leading record to 90-66. The Blue Jays scored three runs in the second inning on run-scoring hits by Gimenez, Tyler Heineman and George Springer. Guerrero hit a two-run double in the fifth and Addison Barger followed with an RBI double to give Toronto a 6-2 lead.

The Blue Jays added two insurance runs in the eighth on an RBI single by Ernie Clement and a run-scoring triple from Gimenez to secure the victory before an evening crowd of 32,936 at Kauffman Stadium.

The Royals, who fell to 78-78, had cut the deficit to one run with a two-run fifth inning. Maikel Garcia and Salvador Perez delivered RBI singles in the frame, and Randal Grichuk brought home another run with a single in the sixth to make it 6-5.

Toronto’s offense produced 12 hits, while Kansas City managed 10 in the game that took 2 hours, 39 minutes.

Seranthony Domínguez earned the win in relief for Toronto, improving to 4-4 after recording four outs without allowing a hit and striking out two. Jeff Hoffman closed the door in the ninth for his 33rd save of the season, pitching a scoreless inning and allowing one hit.

Kansas City starter Michael Wacha took the loss, falling to 9-13. He was charged with six runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings.

The Blue Jays’ victory snapped a two-game skid after dropping the first two games of the series in Kansas City, including a 20-1 defeat on Friday.

Toronto next returns home to open a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday. The Royals begin a six-game road trip with a three-game set against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday.
