Toronto Blue Jays at Kansas City Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Interstat) — The Toronto Blue Jays will look to salvage the finale of their three-game series against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium after a pair of stunning defeats.

The series has been a afternoonmare for the playoff-bound Blue Jays (89-65), who were shut out 2-0 on Saturday after suffering a humiliating 20-1 rout on Friday afternoon. The losses have stalled Toronto’s momentum as it jockeys for American League postseason positioning.

Kansas City (77-77), sitting at .500, has dominated the season series, winning four of the five meetings, including a three-game sweep at Rogers Centre in early August.

Despite the recent results, Interstat’s game simulator projects a return to form for Toronto, favoring the Blue Jays 6-4. Betting markets also list Toronto as a -1.5 run favorite with an over/under of 9 runs.

The Blue Jays’ offense, which mustered just one run over the first two games of the series, will hope to build on the lone bright spot from Friday’s blowout: a 2-for-3 performance with a home run from designated hitter George Springer. Relievers Braydon Fisher and Yariel Rodríguez also provided scoreless outings in the lopsided loss.

The Royals’ Friday victory was a historic team effort. Starter Michael Lorenzen was dominant, allowing one run over 7 2/3 innings. The offense was powered by Michael Massey, who went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs, and Carter Jensen, who drove in two runs.

Following Sunday’s contest, the Blue Jays return home to open a critical six-game homestand against the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays. The Royals embark on a seven-game West Coast road trip, starting with three against the Los Angeles Angels followed by four versus the Athletics.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. CDT.
