Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals

ST. LOUIS (Interstat) — Brice Turang’s RBI single in the top of the 10th inning broke a tie and lifted the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night at Busch Stadium.

In a tightly contested game where both teams collected nine hits, the Brewers (95-60) needed extra innings to secure the win and even the series after dropping the opener 7-1 on Friday.

The decisive inning began with Jackson Chourio, the automatic runner, placed on second base. After Christian Yelich lined out and a groundout advanced Chourio to third, Turang delivered a sharp ground ball single up the middle off Cardinals reliever JoJo Romero to score the go-ahead run.

Milwaukee’s bullpen sealed the victory. Jared Koenig, who worked a scoreless ninth, returned for the 10th and induced a game-ending double play. Brendan Donovan’s grounder back to the mound led to a 1-3-6 putout, erasing automatic runner Lars Nootbaar. Koenig then got Iván Herrera to fly out to left field to end the game, earning his seventh win against one loss. Romero took the loss, falling to 5-6.

The game was a pitcher’s duel for much of the night. Milwaukee struck first in the second inning when Jake Bauers doubled and later scored on a sharp RBI single by Joey Ortiz.

St. Louis (75-80) answered with single runs in the fourth and fifth to take a brief lead. Nolan Arenado tied the game with an RBI single that scored Iván Herrera. The Cardinals went ahead an inning later when Brendan Donovan drove in Pedro Pagés with a single, though the rally was halted by an inning-ending double play.

Milwaukee tied it at 2-2 in the sixth. Caleb Durbin led off with a double, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Vaughn.

Both starting pitchers delivered solid performances. St. Louis right-hander Miles Mikolas allowed two runs on seven hits over five innings, striking out three. Milwaukee’s Chad Patrick was charged with two runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings of work.

The Brewers’ relief corps of Aaron Ashby, Abner Uribe and Koenig combined for 4 2/3 innings of scoreless, two-hit ball, striking out four. St. Louis’ Kyle Leahy provided two strong innings of relief, allowing just one hit.

The game-time temperature was 72 degrees, and the contest was played in 2 hours, 44 minutes before an announced crowd of 36,212.

The teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday.
