Atlanta Braves at Detroit Tigers
DETROIT (Interstat) — Nacho Alvarez Jr. hit the first two home runs of his major league career, including a game-tying single in the ninth inning, to lift the Atlanta Braves to their seventh straight victory, 6-5 over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday afternoon.
The Braves (72-83) trailed 5-4 entering the ninth before mounting a comeback against Tigers reliever Will Vest (6-5). Ozzie Albies and Ha-Seong Kim started the inning with singles. After Vest struck out Michael Harris II and Sandy León, Alvarez delivered a single to right field to score Albies and tie the game. Jurickson Profar followed with another single to right, driving in Kim for the go-ahead run.
Alvarez, the Braves’ third baseman, went 3 for 4 with three RBIs. His first career homer, a solo shot in the third inning, opened the scoring for Atlanta. Drake Baldwin later hit a two-run homer in the same inning to give the Braves a 3-1 lead.
The Tigers (85-70) lost their fifth straight and eighth in their last nine games, seeing their lead in the AL Central shrink to 1 1/2 games over the Cleveland Guardians. Spencer Torkelson led Detroit’s offense, going 2 for 3 with a three-run homer in the seventh inning that gave the Tigers a short-lived 5-4 advantage. Zach McKinstry also homered for Detroit in the sixth.
Atlanta starter Joey Wentz pitched five innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out seven. Dylan Dodd (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless eighth inning, and Raisel Iglesias recorded his 28th save with a perfect ninth.
Detroit’s bullpen, aside from Vest, was effective. Troy Melton, Tommy Kahnle, Tyler Holton and Rafael Montero combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
The game, played in front of 38,079 fans at Comerica Park, took 2 hours, 52 minutes. The total of 11 runs went under the pregame over/under line of 9.
