Philadelphia Phillies at Arizona Diamondbacks
PHOENIX (Interstat) — Alec Bohm drove in three runs in his return from the injured list and Walker Buehler provided 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, powering the Philadelphia Phillies to an 8-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night at Chase Field.
The loss was a costly one for the Diamondbacks, who fell three games behind the New York Mets for the final National League wild-card spot with only eight games remaining in the regular season. The Phillies, meanwhile, continued their late-season surge, winning for the 16th time in their last 21 games to improve to 92-62. Arizona dropped to .500 at 77-77.
Arizona struck first against Phillies starter Taijuan Walker. Ketel Marte led off the bottom of the first inning with his 26th home run of the season. The Diamondbacks added a second run later in the frame when Corbin Carroll scored on a Blaze Alexander forceout, a call that was upheld after a Diamondbacks challenge.
Philadelphia began its methodical comeback in the second inning. Brandon Marsh singled and scored on a double by Bohm, who was activated from the IL before the game. The Phillies tied the game in the fifth on a solo home run to left field by Harrison Bader, his 17th of the year.
They took the lead for good in the sixth. Marsh singled, stole second base and came home on a two-out RBI single from Weston Wilson.
The game broke open in the later innings. Nick Castellanos provided a key blow in the eighth, launching a two-run homer to left field after Bohm reached on a fielding error by Alexander. The Phillies then put the game out of reach with a three-run ninth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Bohm and an RBI single from Castellanos.
Buehler, a two-time All-Star making his second appearance for Philadelphia after being released by Boston on Aug. 29, was stellar in relief. He allowed just two hits and struck out three over 3 2/3 innings to earn the win, improving his record to 9-7. He took over for Walker, who went four innings, allowing two runs on five hits.
Arizona starter Ryne Nelson took a no-decision, pitching five innings and surrendering two runs on five hits. The loss was charged to reliever Jalen Beeks (5-2).
Bader and Bohm led Philadelphia’s 13-hit attack with three and two hits, respectively. Marte had three of Arizona’s seven hits, including his homer and a double.
The game took 2 hours, 59 minutes and was played in front of an announced crowd of 36,981.
The teams continue their three-game series on Saturday.
