San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Shohei Ohtani hit his major league-leading 52nd home run, a three-run shot in a four-run fifth inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers clinched a postseason berth with a 6-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Friday night in what was likely Clayton Kershaw’s final regular-season home start.
The future Hall of Famer, who announced his retirement Thursday, received a prolonged standing ovation from a sellout crowd of 53,037 at Dodger Stadium when he was pulled with one out in the fifth inning. He tipped his cap as he walked to the dugout, where he was greeted by hugs from manager Dave Roberts and his teammates.
Kershaw did not factor into the decision, leaving with the Dodgers trailing 2-1. He allowed two runs and four hits over 4 1/3 innings, striking out six and walking four.
The Giants struck quickly against the left-hander, with Heliot Ramos leading off the game with a solo home run. San Francisco added another run in the third on an RBI single by Wilmer Flores that scored Matt Chapman, who had doubled.
The Dodgers got a run back in the second on a solo homer by Miguel Rojas, but the game turned dramatically in the fifth. After Kershaw’s departure, Andy Pages singled and Enrique Hernández walked. Following a strikeout, Ohtani connected for his three-run blast off Giants starter Robbie Ray to give Los Angeles a 4-2 lead. Mookie Betts followed with a solo shot, his 20th of the year, to cap the inning.
Los Angeles added an insurance run in the sixth when Rojas doubled and scored on a double by Pages, who went 3 for 3.
San Francisco scored its final run in the seventh on an RBI single by Chapman.
The Dodgers’ bullpen secured the win. Edgardo Henriquez (2-1) earned the victory with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out three. Tanner Scott pitched a scoreless ninth for his 22nd save, striking out two.
Ray (11-8) took the loss for San Francisco, surrendering five runs on five hits over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out five.
With the win, the Dodgers improved to 87-67, while the Giants fell to 76-78. The game time was 2 hours, 47 minutes.
The two teams continue their series Saturday.
