Buffalo Bisons at Omaha Storm Chasers
OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — A quartet of Omaha pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout and Michael Massey homered as the Storm Chasers earned their first win of the season, 3-0 over the Buffalo Bisons on Wednesday at Werner Park.
The game, played in 2 hours and 33 minutes before an afternoon crowd of 1,470, was a stark contrast to the pregame projection from Interstat, which had simulated a 4-3 Buffalo victory.
Omaha’s pitching staff dominated from the start. Starter Shane Panzini set the tone with two hitless innings, striking out two, to earn the win and improve to 1-0. He was followed by Ryan Bergert, who allowed one hit over three scoreless frames with four strikeouts. Eli Morgan then delivered two perfect innings, fanning three, and Eric Cerantola worked around a ninth-inning double to secure his first save of the year.
Buffalo’s best chance came in the first inning against Panzini. Yohendrick Pinango singled and Riley Tirotta walked with two outs, but the threat ended with a groundout. The Bisons put two more on in the third via walks but again failed to score, flying out to end the inning. They would not advance another runner past first base until the ninth.
Omaha broke through against Buffalo starter and losing pitcher Josh Fleming (0-1) in the fourth. Massey led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout, and scored on Kameron Misner’s RBI single to center.
The most important sequence of the game came in the sixth inning, immediately after Buffalo’s Charles McAdoo had broken up the no-hit bid with a two-out single in the top half. Massey led off the bottom of the inning against reliever Devereaux Harrison and drove a fly ball over the left-field wall for a solo home run, extending Omaha’s lead to 2-0. The homer provided critical breathing room and came just as Buffalo’s offense had shown a faint sign of life.
The Storm Chasers added an insurance run in the seventh. Brandon Drury doubled and later scored on Abraham Toro’s sacrifice fly.
Buffalo’s final opportunity came in the ninth. McAdoo doubled with one out and advanced to third on a groundout, bringing the tying run to the plate. Cerantola ended the game by striking out C.J. Stubbs swinging.
The Bisons, who fell to 2-2, managed only three singles and a double from McAdoo. They went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.
With the victory, Omaha improved to 1-3. The two teams continue their series Thursday in Papillion.
