Gwinnett Stripers at Round Rock Express
ROUND ROCK, Texas (Interstat) — The Gwinnett Stripers scored twice in the 10th inning without the benefit of a hit to outlast the Round Rock Express 5-3 on Tuesday night at Dell Diamond, securing their first win of the season and handing the Express their third straight loss.
The game’s most critical sequence came in the top of the 10th inning, with the score tied 3-3. Gwinnett’s Jim Jarvis was hit by a pitch from losing pitcher Emiliano Teodo to load the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, Teodo walked Luke Williams and Aaron Schunk on eight consecutive pitches, forcing in two runs to provide the decisive margin.
The finish capped a game that defied pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 2-1 Round Rock victory, and its ELO system gave the Express a 59.4% probability to win.
Gwinnett seized immediate control, as Jarvis and Aaron Schunk hit back-to-back solo home runs off Round Rock starter Austin Bergner in the first inning. That early 2-0 advantage stood until the fifth, when Round Rock’s Trevor Hauver launched a two-run homer to center field, scoring Alejandro Osuna, who had doubled.
Round Rock tied the game in the seventh. Michael Helman singled, moved to third on an Osuna single, and scored on another RBI single by Hauver, his third hit of the night. The Express threatened further but stranded the potential go-ahead run.
Gwinnett reclaimed the lead in the ninth. José Azocar doubled, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a two-out single by Chadwick Tromp off reliever Alexis Díaz. The lead was short-lived, as Round Rock’s automatic runner, Hauver, advanced to third with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Gwinnett reliever Ian Hamilton stranded him there with a flyout and a groundout, sending the game to extra innings.
Hamilton earned the win, working two scoreless innings of relief. Javy Guerra pitched a perfect 10th, retiring the Express in order with a flyout and two groundouts to record the save.
Despite the loss, Round Rock out-hit Gwinnett 11-7. The Express, however, went 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine baserunners. Gwinnett starter Lucas Braun allowed two runs over five innings, while Round Rock’s bullpen of Robby Ahlstrom, Peyton Gray, Díaz and Teodo combined for 5 2/3 innings of relief before Teodo’s control issues in the 10th.
The game lasted 3 hours, 18 minutes before an announced crowd of 8,907.
With the victory, Gwinnett improves to 1-2 on the young season. Round Rock falls to 0-3. The two teams continue their six-game series Wednesday.
