Southern Idaho vs Howard (Tex.)
BIG SPRING, Texas (Interstat) — In a clash of two of the nation’s premier junior college men’s basketball programs, the Howard College Hawks used a dominant second-half performance to pull away from the College of Southern Idaho Eagles, 82-67, on Saturday.
The game, featuring teams with a combined 61 wins this season, lived up to its billing as a tightly contested battle for the first 20 minutes before Howard’s offensive efficiency and rebounding prowess created an insurmountable gap.
Southern Idaho, the visiting Eagles, opened the game with precision, building an early lead behind the shooting of Ben Thornbrue and Jalen Lyn. The Eagles shot effectively in the first half, taking a narrow 67-59 lead into the intermission. Thornbrue finished with a team-high 21 points, while Lyn added 19.
The second half, however, belonged entirely to the Hawks. Howard’s defense stiffened, holding the potent Eagles’ offense to just 37 points after halftime. The Hawks’ own offensive attack, which had been steady in the first half, exploded for 53 points in the second period. The turnaround was fueled by superior shooting from the field, where Howard hit 28 of 57 attempts compared to Southern Idaho’s 20 of 58, and from beyond the arc, where the Hawks connected on 10 of 21 three-pointers against the Eagles’ 6 of 27.
The most important stretch of the game came early in the second half as Howard steadily erased the deficit and then built its own commanding lead. A key sequence saw the Hawks capitalize on Southern Idaho turnovers and missed shots to ignite a decisive run. Terry Copeland, the game’s standout performer, was instrumental during this pivotal stretch, scoring on put-backs, finishing at the rim, and controlling the glass. His presence inside overwhelmed the Eagles, who struggled to match his physicality.
Copeland, Howard’s top star, delivered a monumental performance with 23 points and a staggering 16 rebounds in 36 minutes, consistently providing second-chance opportunities and anchoring the defense. He was complemented brilliantly by guard Kuai Deng, who scored 20 points, including several crucial three-pointers that stretched the Southern Idaho defense. Daniel Culberson orchestrated the offense with eight assists.
Southern Idaho, which fell to 30-3 overall, received a strong all-around effort from Ace Reiser, who played all 40 minutes and dished out six assists, and Guygustone Kasenga, who contributed six points, seven rebounds and two blocks. But the Eagles could not sustain their early shooting success and were outrebounded 40-31 by the taller, more aggressive Hawks.
Howard, improving to 31-5, showcased the depth and balance that has characterized its season. The Hawks’ offensive rating of 111.7 points per 100 possessions starkly outpaced the Eagles’ 95.8, underlining the efficiency gap that decided the contest. The win solidified Howard’s status as one of the nation’s elite teams, overcoming a Southern Idaho squad that had won 30 of its previous 32 games.
The victory was a testament to Howard’s defensive adjustments and offensive execution after halftime, turning a close game into a convincing double-digit victory on their home floor.
