Northern Oklahoma-Enid vs Chipola
MARIANNA, Fla. (Interstat) — The Northern Oklahoma-Enid Jets executed a disciplined and efficient game plan to upset the Chipola Indians 64-50 in a men’s junior college basketball game Tuesday night, defying statistical projections that heavily favored the home team.
From the opening tip, the Jets established a pace and precision that Chipola struggled to match. Northern Oklahoma-Enid built a 33-23 lead in the first quarter, fueled by early three-pointers from Darian Grant and Dontrell Yearby, and never relinquished control. The Jets extended their advantage to 64-50 by the end of the second quarter, maintaining a double-digit lead for nearly the entire contest.
The most important part of the game was Northern Oklahoma-Enid’s ability to capitalize on Chipola’s mistakes while maximizing their own offensive opportunities. The Jets forced 17 Chipola turnovers, converting them into crucial points, while committing only nine turnovers themselves. This stark disparity in ball security was the foundation of the upset. Despite being outrebounded 44-35 and allowing 16 offensive boards to Chipola, the Jets’ defensive pressure and offensive patience proved more decisive.
Gavin Barnard, the top star for Northern Oklahoma-Enid, orchestrated the victory with a complete performance, scoring 13 points, grabbing six rebounds, and dishing out eight assists. His backcourt mate, Darian Grant, led all scorers with 17 points and added seven rebounds. The Jets’ backcourt controlled the flow, mitigating Chipola’s size advantage inside.
Chipola, which entered the game with a 24-8 record, could not find consistent offense. The Indians shot just 19 of 56 from the floor and a dismal 3 of 17 from three-point range. They also left points at the free throw line, making only 9 of 18 attempts. Hedrens Bartelus recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Aaron Richard added 11 points and nine boards, but Chipola’s offensive rating of 76.3 points per 100 possessions underscored a night of frustrated execution.
In contrast, Northern Oklahoma-Enid, now 16-11, posted an offensive rating of 91.9. The Jets were opportunistic from beyond the arc, hitting 9 of 29 attempts compared to Chipola’s three makes, and were nearly flawless at the foul line, sinking 13 of 14 free throws. This combination of efficient scoring and forced errors allowed the Jets to secure a wire-to-wire victory on the road.
The win marks a significant result for Northern Oklahoma-Enid, which was projected by Interstat’s ELO system to have less than a 20 percent chance of victory against a Chipola team that had been a consistent force throughout its season. The Jets’ strategy of limiting possessions, protecting the basketball, and converting from the perimeter delivered a decisive outcome.
