Bishop State vs Northwest Florida State

Underdog Wildcats Face Raiders in NJCAA Tournament Opener

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (Interstat) — The Northwest Florida State Raiders, riding a strong season and anchored by a dominant forward, are set to face the Bishop State Wildcats in the first round of the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship on Sunday, March 22, 2026.

The Raiders (22-7) enter as a formidable opponent, having consistently competed at a high level in a tough region. Their campaign is led by forward Justin Burns, who has been a force on the boards. Burns is coming off a 38-minute, 14-rebound performance in a narrow 66-63 loss to Chipola on March 13. In his last five full games, he has averaged a double-double, including a 10-point, 13-rebound outing in a win over Miami Dade.

Bishop State (14-13) arrives as the clear underdog but with momentum, having won its play-in game 71-68 at Shelton State on March 14 to secure the tournament berth. The Wildcats have shown offensive firepower, scoring 90 or more points in six of their last ten contests, including a 118-point outburst against Southern Union State on Feb. 15. However, defensive consistency has been an issue, and they will face their toughest test of the season.

The Raiders’ path to Hutchinson included a key 77-62 victory over Chipola in late February, showcasing their potential. They have split four games with Chipola this season, a team that handed them their most recent defeat.

For Bishop State, replicating its recent scoring efficiency against a disciplined Northwest Florida State defense will be critical. The Wildcats’ resume includes a mix of high-scoring wins and defensive lapses, such as a 98-93 loss to Calhoun earlier this month.

The matchup pits Bishop State’s potent offense against a Raiders squad built on balance and interior strength, personified by Burns. The winner will advance in the national championship bracket, while the loser’s season will conclude.

Tip-off is scheduled for Sunday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
