Volunteer State vs Walters State

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Walters State Senators, one of the nation’s premier junior college men’s basketball teams, showcased their dominance from the opening tip, overwhelming the Volunteer State Pioneers 94-63 on Saturday.

The game’s decisive stretch occurred almost immediately, setting a tone of Senator control that never wavered. Walters State opened the contest with a blistering 17-2 run in the first four minutes and fifteen seconds, a sequence that effectively decided the contest before it had truly begun. Jayden Nesbitt scored the game’s first basket just 17 seconds in, and the Senators’ suffocating defense forced two quick Pioneer turnovers. Taquez Butler and Brian Carter fueled the outburst with aggressive plays, including a Carter dunk off an offensive rebound that capped the run and forced a Volunteer State timeout with the score 17-2.

From that point forward, the outcome was never in doubt. Walters State led 46-24 after a first quarter defined by its efficient offense and significant rebounding advantage. The Senators extended their lead to 94-48 by the end of the third quarter before the Pioneers managed a 15-0 run against Senator reserves in the final period to create the 94-63 final margin.

The statistical disparity was stark, underlining the gap between the 21-1 Senators and the 6-16 Pioneers. Walters State shot 51.6% from the field compared to Volunteer State’s 42.2% and owned a commanding 47-21 rebounding edge, including 13 offensive boards that led to 19 second-chance points. The Senators also dished out 23 assists on 33 made field goals, demonstrating unselfish, fluid offense.

Brian Carter led a balanced and potent Walters State attack, scoring 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting, grabbing seven rebounds and blocking four shots in just 21 minutes. Jamar Livingston also scored 18 points, while Taquez Butler added 15, all from beyond the arc, and Jayden Nesbitt contributed 13 points, six rebounds and three assists.

For Volunteer State, Auden Slaughter provided a bright spot with a game-high 23 points. Demeriss Carroll added eight points and four rebounds, and Cannon Hale scored nine points.

The victory was the 12th in a row for Walters State since its only loss of the season on Jan. 14. The Senators have now defeated Volunteer State three times this season by an average of 30.3 points. The Pioneers have lost six consecutive games.

The game was played in front of a capacity crowd at Walters State’s home arena, with the Senators honoring their sophomore class before the contest.
