Volunteer State vs Walters State

Preview: Walters State Hosts Volunteer State in TCCAA/Region VII Tournament

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Walters State Senators, boasting one of the nation’s premier junior college men’s basketball records at 20-1, will open their TCCAA/Region VII Tournament as heavy favorites against the Volunteer State Pioneers on Saturday, March 7, 2026.

The tournament matchup at Walters State is a stark contrast in seasons. The Senators have dominated conference play, their lone loss a 68-66 setback at Motlow State on Jan. 14. They average 95.2 points per game and have won their last six contests by an average margin of 41.8 points, including a 104-56 rout of Motlow State in their regular-season finale on Feb. 25.

Volunteer State (6-15) enters on a five-game losing streak, most recently falling 83-74 to Chattanooga State on Monday. The Pioneers’ season has been defined by offensive struggles, averaging 76.1 points while allowing 87.6 per game.

Walters State swept the regular-season series, winning 101-68 on Nov. 22, 2025, and 99-87 on Feb. 7. In the February meeting, Senators forward Jayden Nesbitt recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Nesbitt, a key contributor, also posted an 18-point, 13-rebound performance in a win over Pellissippi State on Feb. 18.

Volunteer State’s primary threat is guard Cannon Hale, who scored 26 points in the Feb. 7 loss to the Senators and again poured in 26 in Monday’s defeat to Chattanooga State. Support comes from Auden Slaughter (17 points, 5 rebounds vs. Chattanooga State) and Demeriss Carroll (10 points, 6 assists).

Despite the lopsided records, Interstat’s game simulator projects a narrow contest, forecasting a final score of Walters State 100, Volunteer State 100. The outcome will likely hinge on whether the Pioneers’ backcourt, led by Hale, can match the Senators’ depth and offensive firepower over 40 minutes.

Tipoff is scheduled for Saturday afternoon. The winner advances in the double-elimination tournament.
