East Mississippi vs Jones
JONES, Miss. (Interstat) — The Jones Bobcats used a dominant first-quarter offensive display and a standout performance from Braylon Barnes to defeat the East Mississippi Lions 88-71 in a men’s junior college basketball game Tuesday night.
The Bobcats, improving to 12-5, seized control early with a blistering 51-point opening quarter, fueled by efficient shooting and a significant advantage from beyond the arc. Jones connected on 12 of 22 three-point attempts for the game, a 54.5 percent clip, while East Mississippi struggled mightily, making just 3 of 18 from long range.
Barnes led all scorers with 26 points for Jones, adding eight rebounds. His backcourt mate, Dylan Rowe, orchestrated the offense with a double-double of 13 points and 11 assists. Jay Tyler contributed 16 points and Bob Dickson anchored the defense with five blocks to go with 11 points and seven rebounds.
East Mississippi, which fell to 9-9, was paced by DeAndre Lewis’s 27 points and 11 rebounds. Diovion Famakinde added 16 points and Ace McKinnie scored 13 with seven rebounds and two blocks.
The most critical phase of the game was its chaotic and lopsided start. The opening minutes featured a remarkable sequence of missed shots and turnovers by both teams, but Jones quickly found its rhythm. After East Mississippi missed its first seven field goal attempts, the Bobcats capitalized. Consecutive three-pointers from Barnes and Tyler sparked a 17-0 run that transformed an early 2-0 deficit into a 17-2 lead, a margin from which the Lions never recovered.
Jones maintained its offensive efficiency throughout the first quarter, shooting 60 percent from the field and building a 51-29 lead after the initial period. The Bobcats’ offensive rating of 115.0, compared to the Lions’ 90.1, underscored the gap in execution.
East Mississippi showed resilience in the second quarter, outscoring Jones 42-37 behind Lewis’s aggressive play, but the first-quarter hole proved insurmountable. The Lions trimmed the deficit to 72-69 with just under 10 minutes remaining after a Famakinde jumper, but Jones responded immediately with a Keron Jackson three-pointer. The Bobcats then closed the game on a 16-2 run over the final five minutes to secure the victory.
Jones dominated several key statistical categories, shooting 53.2 percent from the field overall to East Mississippi’s 37.1 percent. The Bobcats also recorded seven blocks and committed only 10 turnovers while forcing 14.
The win was Jones’s third in its last four games. East Mississippi has now lost four of its last five.
Jones is scheduled to play next at Holmes on Thursday. East Mississippi will travel to face Hinds on Monday.
