Dodge City vs Cowley
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. (Interstat) — Marcus Smith scored 30 points and the Cowley College Tigers used a dominant second-half performance to pull away from the Dodge City Conquistadors for a 91-81 victory in a men’s junior college basketball game Monday night.
The game, a rescheduled contest from the previous day, turned decisively after halftime. Dodge City held a narrow 81-78 lead late in the second half, but Cowley closed the game on a 13-0 run over the final 2 minutes, 38 seconds to secure the win. The Tigers outscored the Conquistadors 56-49 in the second half.
Smith, the game’s standout performer, was instrumental in the closing surge. He hit a crucial 3-pointer with 2:06 remaining to give Cowley an 84-81 lead, part of a personal 7-0 run that also included a driving jump shot and two free throws. He finished the night making 9 of 10 attempts from the foul line and added four rebounds. His performance marked a significant bounce-back after being held to 11 points in Cowley’s previous game.
The most important stretch of the game was Cowley’s final defensive stand, which coincided with its game-ending run. After Dodge City’s Derrick Rivers made a layup to cut Cowley’s lead to 89-81 with 58 seconds left, the Conquistadors did not score again. Cowley forced two key turnovers in the final minute, one by Rivers and another leading to a steal by Xavier Vickerstaff, to stifle any chance of a Dodge City rally.
Rivers led Dodge City with 27 points, while Rickey Loftin II added a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Brad Johnson contributed 11 points and eight rebounds for the Conquistadors.
Cowley’s efficiency proved decisive. The Tigers shot 50.9% from the field (29 of 57) compared to Dodge City’s 42.4% (28 of 66). While both teams made seven 3-pointers, Cowley attempted two fewer. The Tigers also capitalized more frequently at the free-throw line, making 26 of 35 attempts, while Dodge City was an efficient 19 of 21.
Leslie Owens Jr. facilitated the Cowley offense with a game-high seven assists to go with 11 points. Kyden Thompson added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Tigers, and Jordan Smith provided a spark off the bench with 13 points and seven rebounds in just 13 minutes.
The win improved Cowley’s season record to 10-7, while Dodge City fell to 15-7. The teams had split their two previous meetings this season, with each winning on its home court.
Cowley next plays at Cloud County on Wednesday. Dodge City will host Cloud County on Saturday.
