Southern Nevada vs Howard (Tex.)

BIG SPRING, Texas (Interstat) — The Howard College Hawks used a dominant second-quarter surge to pull away from the College of Southern Nevada Coyotes for a decisive 101-77 victory in a men’s junior college basketball game Friday night.

The game, played before a home crowd at Dorothy Garrett Coliseum, was effectively decided by a staggering 58-point outburst from the Hawks in the second quarter. That explosion turned a competitive, high-scoring first quarter into a lopsided affair. Howard entered halftime leading 101-77 after the two teams combined for 177 points in a frenetic opening half.

The most critical sequence of the contest occurred early in the second quarter, when Howard transformed a single-digit game into a commanding lead. Leading 49-42, the Hawks unleashed a devastating 16-2 run over a span of just two minutes and 20 seconds. The run was fueled by relentless defensive pressure and efficient transition offense. It began with a Terry Copeland layup and free throw, included a Daniel Culberson steal and layup, and was capped by an Elijah Tshibangu layup that pushed the Howard advantage to 65-44 with 16:34 remaining in the period.

That stretch broke the game open, as Southern Nevada never recovered. The Hawks’ defense, which recorded 10 steals, forced the Coyotes into 16 turnovers, many of which became easy baskets the other way. Howard’s offensive efficiency was stark, scoring 101 points on 76 possessions for an offensive rating of 133.1, while Southern Nevada managed a 105.2 rating on their 73 trips.

Howard’s balance and depth were overwhelming. Terry Copeland led all scorers with 20 points in just 23 minutes, showcasing his effectiveness around the rim. Daniel Culberson orchestrated the offense with a game-high eight assists to go with 11 points. Dace Pleasant added 16 points, Harouna Sangare contributed 13 points, six rebounds and four assists, and Victor Yimga Moukouri posted 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Ten different Hawks scored, with Roee Oselka adding eight points in only seven minutes.

Southern Nevada, which fell to 3-4 on the season, was led by Drake Watanabe’s 21 points off the bench, including five three-pointers. Ivoryon Cuffee scored 17 points and Ryan Raad added 15, but the Coyotes were ultimately undone by a massive disparity on the glass. Howard crushed Southern Nevada on the boards, 49-20, including a 21-5 advantage in offensive rebounds that led to numerous second-chance opportunities.

The Hawks, who entered the game with an 84 percent probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, improved to 11-2 with the victory. They have now won five consecutive games. Southern Nevada has lost two straight following a win over Community Christian.

Both teams are scheduled to meet again later in the season. Howard returns to action on Jan. 5 at home against Frank Phillips, while Southern Nevada’s next game is at Cochise on Jan. 8.
