Barstow vs El Camino
TORRANCE, Calif. (Interstat) — In a chaotic and foul-filled California junior college men’s basketball game that required overtime to decide, the Barstow Vikings outlasted the El Camino Warriors 96-92 on Thursday night.
The contest was a tale of two halves defined by a staggering disparity in free throw attempts. Barstow, despite shooting just 35.5% from the field, attempted 46 free throws, making 34. El Camino, which shot 50% from the floor, went to the line only 20 times, converting 14. The Warriors were whistled for 32 personal fouls to the Vikings’ 18.
The game’s most important stretch came late in regulation. After a torrid first half that saw El Camino lead 85-54 at the break, the Warriors’ offense went cold. They managed only seven points in the entire third quarter. Barstow, led by Peter Oguama’s interior dominance and Trestyne Nguru’s scoring, steadily chipped away at the large deficit.
Barstow completed the comeback to force overtime, where their ability to draw fouls and convert at the line proved decisive. The Vikings sealed the win from the charity stripe in the extra period.
Oguama was the top star for Barstow, posting a massive double-double with 24 points and 19 rebounds. Nguru led all scorers with 28 points and added 7 rebounds and 6 assists. For El Camino, Kai Johnson carried the offensive load with 32 points, though he committed several turnovers down the stretch. Rocco Gaffoglio added 14 points.
The victory improved Barstow’s season record to 3-6, while El Camino fell to 6-4.
Barstow next plays at Imperial Valley on Monday. El Camino hosts Bakersfield next Wednesday.
