Long Beach vs Orange Coast
Preview: Long Beach Vikings vs. Orange Coast Pirates
WEST LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Interstat) — Two men’s junior college basketball teams seeking their first win in nearly a month will meet Saturday when the Long Beach Vikings face the Orange Coast Pirates in a WLAC Tournament contest.
Both programs enter the matchup mired in extended losing streaks. Long Beach (1-7) has dropped seven consecutive games since a season-opening victory on Nov. 7. The Vikings are coming off a 76-57 home loss to Barstow on Friday. Orange Coast (0-8) remains in search of its first win of the season following a 92-61 defeat to San Bernardino Valley, also on Friday.
The game presents a critical opportunity for either squad to halt its skid. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Orange Coast holds a narrow 52.9% probability to win.
Long Beach will rely on forward Jorge Mota, who has been a consistent performer during the losing streak. Mota is averaging 11.3 points and 6.5 rebounds over his last four games. He led the Vikings with 17 points and seven rebounds in Friday’s loss. Guard Lawrence Brown, who had 13 points and four assists against Barstow, provides backcourt support.
Orange Coast’s hopes will hinge on forward Chris Obiajulu, who posted 12 points and eight rebounds in the Pirates’ most recent outing. Logan Barbee added 13 points off the bench in that game, offering a potential spark.
The Vikings’ season has been marked by narrow defeats, including a 94-90 loss to Rio Hondo on Dec. 4 and an overtime setback at Cypress on Nov. 26. The Pirates have struggled with defensive consistency, allowing an average of 86.6 points per game during their eight-game slide.
Saturday’s winner will gain a measure of momentum heading into the final stretch of non-conference play. Long Beach visits Citrus on Dec. 9, while Orange Coast hosts MiraCosta on Dec. 12.
Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 6, at the WLAC Tournament.
