Eastern Wyoming vs Colorado Northwestern
RANGELY, Colo. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and offensive miscues, the Eastern Wyoming Lancers snapped a five-game losing streak with a 74-65 victory over the Colorado Northwestern Spartans in a men’s junior college basketball game Saturday.
The Lancers, who improved to 2-5, leveraged a disruptive defense that forced 16 Spartans turnovers and converted them into critical scoring opportunities. Eastern Wyoming recorded 12 steals, led by the backcourt activity of Jumarion Weh and Joseph Jean, which consistently disrupted Colorado Northwestern’s offensive rhythm.
Despite both teams finishing with identical offensive possession counts of 74, Eastern Wyoming’s efficiency proved decisive. The Lancers posted an offensive rating of 100.5, outperforming the Spartans’ mark of 88.4. The game was a tale of two halves, with both teams locked in a 30-30 tie after a frantic first quarter before Eastern Wyoming slowly built its lead in the second.
Joseph Jean was the offensive catalyst for the Lancers, pouring in a game-high 22 points in just 20 minutes of action. Jean was efficient from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. Drezdon Jensen added 18 points for Eastern Wyoming, though he needed 20 shot attempts to reach his total.
The Lancers controlled the glass, outrebounding the Spartans 37-34, and shared the ball effectively, tallying 12 assists to just four for Colorado Northwestern. Jumarion Weh facilitated much of the offense, finishing with a team-high six assists to go with nine rebounds.
For Colorado Northwestern, which fell to 2-3, the loss came despite a strong performance from the free-throw line where they shot 85 percent. Carter Killian led the Spartans with 14 points, while Trey Johnson added 15. The Spartans’ frontcourt of Gibson Walton and Finn Powelson combined for 20 points and 17 rebounds, but the team’s ball security issues and lack of playmaking, evidenced by their low assist total, proved insurmountable.
The Spartans were projected as heavy favorites by Interstat’s ELO system, which gave them a 70.20 percent probability to win. Eastern Wyoming defied those odds with a gritty road performance, capitalizing on their defensive intensity to secure the win.
Eastern Wyoming looks to build on the victory when it hosts Northeastern (Colo.) on Thursday. Colorado Northwestern will aim to regroup at home against Central Wyoming on Friday.
