McCook vs Western Wyoming

ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. (Interstat) — In a high-octane, back-and-forth affair that defied pregame projections, the McCook Indians escaped with a narrow 94-91 victory over the Western Wyoming Mustangs in a men’s junior college basketball game on Saturday.

The contest, played at a frantic pace from the opening tip, saw the Indians improve their season record to 4-1, while the Mustangs fell to 1-2. The final score stood in stark contrast to the predictions, as Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 100-100 tie and gave Western Wyoming a 61.6 percent probability of victory.

McCook’s triumph was anchored by a remarkably efficient offensive performance. The Indians scored 94 points on just 73 possessions, resulting in an elite offensive rating of 128.3. Their success came from blistering shooting, particularly from beyond the arc, where they connected on 12 of 22 attempts. Overall, McCook shot 30 for 49 from the field. Western Wyoming was more prolific in volume, taking 76 shots and making 35, including 15 three-pointers, but its offensive rating of 117.9 could not keep pace with McCook’s surgical execution.

The game was a tale of two distinct styles. McCook won with precision and ball security in the scoring column, while Western Wyoming dominated hustle stats, compiling 14 offensive rebounds, 13 steals, and 13 assists compared to McCook’s six assists and six steals. However, the Mustangs’ 22 personal fouls proved costly, sending McCook to the free-throw line 30 times, where the Indians made 22. Western Wyoming attempted only 13 free throws, making six.

Alier Alier led all scorers for McCook, pouring in 23 points and grabbing eight rebounds. He was instrumental down the stretch, including sinking two critical free throws with three seconds remaining to help seal the win. He was supported by a balanced attack from Nate Coley and Djibril Diawara, who each scored 18 points. Diawara also dished out eight assists, while Coley added seven assists and five rebounds. Sofiane Benragba provided a significant spark off the bench with 16 points and five rebounds.

Western Wyoming was led by a trio of high-scoring performances. Yair Aburus topped the Mustangs with 22 points, while Tremmell Darden added 21 and Paulius Narvilas finished with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Jacovey Campbell facilitated the offense with a game-high 12 assists.

The first half was an offensive spectacle, with McCook taking a slim 94-91 lead into the break after both teams combined for 185 points. The second half evolved into a more grinding defensive struggle, but the scoring fireworks never fully ceased.

The final minutes were tense. After a three-pointer by Western Wyoming’s Sean Pendleton brought the Mustangs to within a single point at 91-90 with just seconds left, McCook’s Benragba was fouled and calmly sank two free throws to extend the lead to three. Pendleton then hit another three-pointer at the buzzer for Western Wyoming, but it only served to provide the final margin, as McCook had already done enough to secure the road victory.

McCook looks to continue its momentum at home against Fort Hays Tech on Nov. 14. Western Wyoming will aim to regroup when it hosts Colorado Northwestern on the same date.
