Bakersfield vs Canyons

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Interstat) — In a tightly contested men’s junior college basketball game that came down to the final possession, the Bakersfield College Renegades edged the College of the Canyons Cougars 84-81 on Friday night.

The game, a rematch of a Jan. 28 meeting also won by Bakersfield, was a statistical dead heat for much of the night. Both teams finished with nearly identical shooting numbers and rebounding totals, but the Renegades leveraged a slight edge in efficiency and key defensive plays to secure the road victory.

The most critical sequence of the game unfolded not in the closing seconds, but early in the contest. After Canyons opened the game on an 11-0 run, Bakersfield coach called a timeout just two minutes and 51 seconds into the first quarter. The stoppage proved pivotal. The Renegades responded with a 13-2 run of their own to tie the game, fundamentally resetting the contest and preventing the Cougars from building an insurmountable early lead. The game settled into a back-and-forth affair from that point forward, with neither team leading by more than a few possessions.

Bakersfield’s Zykiar Henderson, the team’s top star, led the way with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds. Markell Brooks provided a game-high 27 points for the Renegades. The Cougars were paced by Dwayne Boston Jr. with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Craig Irons added 18 points and eight rebounds.

The Renegades improved to 15-11 overall, while the Cougars fell to 14-12.

Statistically, the game was a mirror image in many categories. Bakersfield shot 45.3% from the field on 75 attempts, while Canyons shot 45.2% on 73 attempts. Both teams struggled from beyond the arc, with Bakersfield making 3 of 17 and Canyons hitting just 2 of 13. The Renegades won the battle on the glass 42-41 and forced 14 Cougar turnovers while committing 12.

The difference came at the free-throw line and in playmaking. While Canyons was more efficient, making 13 of 16 free throws, Bakersfield attempted more, making 13 of 24. The Renegades also dished out 10 assists to the Cougars’ six and recorded 10 steals to Canyons’ six, highlighting a more disruptive defensive effort that generated extra possessions.

The outcome defied the pregame analytics, as Interstat’s ELO system had projected Canyons with a 64.8 percent probability to win on their home floor. Instead, Bakersfield completed a regular-season sweep of the series.

The game was organized by the California Community College Athletic Association.
