Bakersfield vs Canyons

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Interstat) — Identical records and a recent nail-biter will set the stage for a pivotal California community college men’s basketball clash Friday when the Bakersfield Renegades visit the Canyons Cougars.

Both teams enter the 7 p.m. matchup at 13-11 overall, making the contest crucial for postseason positioning. The Renegades will look to complete a regular-season sweep after edging the Cougars 85-78 at home on Jan. 28.

Bakersfield is led by forward Markell Brooks, who is coming off a 24-point, 9-rebound performance in a loss to Citrus on Feb. 14. In the first meeting against Canyons, Brooks posted 15 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. His recent stretch includes a 30-point, 16-rebound effort in a win over Los Angeles Valley on Jan. 24.

Canyons counters with guard Dwayne Boston Jr., who scored 15 points in the earlier loss to Bakersfield. Boston is averaging 18.3 points over his last three games, including a 23-point outing in an overtime loss to Los Angeles Valley on Feb. 11.

Both teams seek to rebound from losses in their last outings. Bakersfield fell 82-69 to Citrus, while Canyons dropped a 78-66 decision at West Los Angeles on Feb. 14.

The Renegades have shown a pattern of strong rebounding, with Brooks and Zykiar Henderson (11 rebounds vs. Citrus) controlling the glass. Canyons will need to counter that interior presence to improve on its three-game losing skid.

Friday’s winner will gain a critical head-to-head tiebreaker and momentum heading into the final stretch of the conference schedule.
