Irvine Valley vs Fullerton
FULLERTON, Calif. (Interstat) — The Fullerton College Hornets showcased their dominance as one of the nation’s premier junior college men’s basketball teams Friday night, methodically dispatching the Irvine Valley Lasers 84 to 69 in a California Community College Athletic Association matchup.
The victory improved Fullerton’s remarkable season record to 26 wins and 1 loss, while Irvine Valley fell to 15 wins and 12 losses. The Hornets have now defeated the Lasers twice this season, including a 71 to 38 rout on Jan. 28.
From the opening tip, the game was characterized by Fullerton’s superior efficiency and defensive pressure. While the first quarter was competitive, with Irvine Valley scoring 32 points, the Hornets’ offensive firepower was on full display as they poured in 39. The Lasers kept pace for a time, even holding a brief 69 to 0 lead in the opening seconds after a Nate Tuttle 3-pointer, but that anomaly was quickly erased.
The most important stretch of the game came in the second quarter, where Fullerton transformed a single-digit contest into a commanding victory. Leading 51 to 46 with just over seven minutes remaining in the half, the Hornets unleashed a decisive 18 to 5 run. The surge was fueled by stifling defense and a balanced attack. Brayden Smith was pivotal during this span, converting a layup and a pair of free throws, while MJ Smith added a tip-in and Donovan Pitts contributed a jump shot. The run gave Fullerton a 69 to 51 advantage and effectively sealed the game, as the Lasers never threatened again, unable to cut the deficit below 13 points.
Fullerton’s win was built on elite offensive execution and a formidable defensive presence. The Hornets scored 84 points on just 69 possessions, an offensive rating of 121.9, and shot 51.7 percent from the floor. Defensively, they blocked nine shots and recorded eight steals, disrupting Irvine Valley’s rhythm and forcing 12 turnovers. The Hornets also controlled the glass with 37 total rebounds, including 11 on the offensive end.
Donovan Pitts led Fullerton with 20 points, while Brayden Smith added 17 points and three blocks. The Hornets’ depth was evident as Jaqari Miles scored 14 points with seven rebounds, Yoda Oke had 13 points and six rebounds, and Trey Thompson orchestrated the offense with seven assists.
Irvine Valley was led by Ahmad Alhammouri’s game-high 21 points, and Matt Mowers added 16 off the bench. Yanis Aldeguer contributed 13 points and six rebounds. The Lasers shot 45.5 percent from the field but were hampered by 12-of-19 shooting from the free throw line and their inability to match Fullerton’s physicality and pace over 40 minutes.
The result reinforced Fullerton’s status as a state title contender, demonstrating a level of consistency and potency that has defined their season. For Irvine Valley, the game highlighted the gap between a solid conference team and a national-caliber powerhouse, as the Hornets pulled away with a clinical and decisive second-quarter run from which the Lasers could not recover.
