Irvine Valley vs Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. (Interstat) — A monumental challenge awaits the Irvine Valley men’s basketball team Friday night as the Lasers travel to face the state powerhouse Fullerton Hornets.

The junior college matchup, scheduled for Feb. 20, 2026, pits two teams on vastly different trajectories. Fullerton (24-1) has dominated California competition, its lone loss coming by a single point in December. Irvine Valley (14-11) seeks consistency, having split its last six games.

The Hornets, ranked among the nation’s elite, handed the Lasers their most lopsided defeat of the season just three weeks ago, a 71-38 rout on Jan. 28. Fullerton’s suffocating defense held Irvine Valley to a season-low point total.

Fullerton’s balance is key. Donovan Pitts, a dynamic scorer, is coming off a 25-point performance in a 93-79 win over Santiago Canyon on Feb. 12. He is supported by contributors like Yoda Oke and rim-protector Brayden Smith. In the Jan. 28 meeting, Pitts had 7 points, 3 assists and a block.

Irvine Valley will rely on guard Sam Meza-Tallada to spark its offense. He erupted for 21 points and 5 assists in a 97-58 win over Orange Coast on Feb. 12, but was held to 5 points in the previous loss to Fullerton. Support from Nate Tuttle and Matt Mowers, who combined for 24 points in the Orange Coast win, will be crucial.

The Lasers’ recent 61-59 victory over Riverside showed they can win tight games, but facing a Hornets squad averaging over 80 points per game requires a near-perfect effort. Fullerton has won its last 12 games by an average margin of 19.5 points.

Friday’s contest represents the ultimate test for Irvine Valley and another opportunity for Fullerton to solidify its championship credentials.
