Los Angeles Valley vs Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Interstat) — In a game defined by offensive struggles and relentless rebounding, the Bakersfield College men’s basketball team outlasted Los Angeles Valley College 77-71 in a California Community College Athletic Association contest Wednesday night.
The Renegades, despite shooting just 40.2 percent from the field and a dismal 15.6 percent from three-point range, used a dominant performance on the glass to secure the victory and sweep the season series. Bakersfield hauled in 52 total rebounds, including 20 on the offensive end, to Los Angeles Valley’s 36. That effort created 16 second-chance points and helped offset the poor shooting.
Zykiar Henderson led all scorers with 28 points for Bakersfield, adding nine rebounds. His performance was pivotal in a game where efficient offense was at a premium. Markell Brooks recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Godwill Fomusoh contributed eight points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
Los Angeles Valley was led by Andy Porcayo’s 20 points. Chris Kirk added 15 points off the bench, and Will Young finished with 14 points and a game-high six assists. Deng Lual anchored the interior defensively with 10 rebounds and three blocks for the Monarchs.
The most important stretch of the game came late in the second quarter. After a Gary Byrd jump shot pulled Los Angeles Valley to within four points at 68-64 with just over four minutes remaining, Bakersfield responded with a decisive 7-0 run to seize control. Henderson hit a tough jumper, and following a Monarchs turnover, Brooks connected on a mid-range shot. After another empty Los Angeles Valley possession, Fomusoh scored inside to extend the Renegades’ lead to 75-64 with 2:45 to play.
The Monarchs could not recover from that deficit, as their own offensive inconsistencies persisted. They shot 42.4 percent for the game and were only slightly better from long range than Bakersfield, making 6 of 22 three-point attempts. Bakersfield’s defensive pressure and rebounding edge ultimately proved too much to overcome.
With the win, Bakersfield improved to 14-11 overall. Los Angeles Valley fell to 7-17. Both teams return to action Friday, with Bakersfield traveling to face Canyons and Los Angeles Valley visiting Antelope Valley.
