Allan Hancock vs Ventura
VENTURA, Calif. (Interstat) — A pivotal California community college men’s basketball rematch is set for Wednesday night when the Ventura Pirates host the Allan Hancock Bulldogs.
The Pirates (23-3), one of the state’s top teams, will look to defend their home court and complete a regular-season sweep. The Bulldogs (19-8) seek revenge and a resume-boosting road win after falling 85-81 in overtime at home to Ventura on Jan. 24.
That prior meeting promises a tightly contested sequel. Ventura’s Jerimiyah Smith was dominant in the first matchup, logging 41 minutes with 22 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. The standout forward enters Wednesday on a hot streak, coming off a 28-point, 14-rebound, six-assist performance in a 114-101 win at Cuesta on Feb. 14.
Allan Hancock will counter with forward Noah Morris, who posted a double-double with 10 points and 17 rebounds in the January loss. Morris has been a consistent force, averaging a double-double over his last seven games. He is fresh off a 17-point, 13-rebound effort in a 72-65 win over Santa Barbara on Feb. 14.
The Bulldogs have won four of their last five, with the lone loss in that stretch coming at Moorpark. Their defense has been key, holding opponents to 65 points or fewer in three of those wins.
Ventura, however, presents the state’s most potent offensive challenge. The Pirates have scored 90 or more points in eight of their last ten games and are riding a nine-game winning streak since their last loss on Dec. 30. Their high-powered attack, led by Smith and supported by scorers like Kam’Ron Cigar, averages well over 90 points per game during this streak.
Wednesday’s showdown will test Allan Hancock’s defensive discipline against Ventura’s offensive firepower. A Bulldogs victory would shake up the conference standings and provide a massive boost ahead of the postseason. A Pirates win would solidify their dominance and continue their momentum into Friday’s game at Oxnard.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Ventura College.
