Cypress vs Riverside
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) — A pivotal California community college men’s basketball matchup with playoff implications is set for Wednesday when the Riverside Tigers host the Cypress Chargers.
Both teams enter the contest with nearly identical records and momentum from decisive victories last week. Riverside (15-10) is coming off a 77-61 road win at Santa Ana, while Cypress (14-11) routed Saddleback 85-67 at home.
The game is a rematch of a Jan. 23 meeting, which Riverside dominated 73-56 on Cypress’s home floor. In that game, Tigers guard Kollen Murphy scored 22 points. He enters Wednesday’s contest averaging 20 points over his last three games, including a 20-point, 5-assist performance against Santa Ana.
For Cypress, avenging that loss will be a priority. Chargers forward Michael Wright, held to 13 points in the first matchup, has been a consistent force. He is averaging a double-double over his last six games, posting 18 points and 10 rebounds in a Jan. 28 win at Santa Ana and a 10-point, 10-rebound outing against Orange Coast on Feb. 6.
The Tigers have shown volatility, following an 83-54 loss at Fullerton with an 80-54 win over Saddleback. The Chargers have been similarly uneven, suffering an 83-63 loss at Fullerton before their big win over Saddleback.
With only one game separating them in the standings, the result will be crucial for postseason positioning. A Riverside win would secure a season sweep and a significant tiebreaker. A Cypress victory would even the season series and tighten the conference race.
The Tigers’ next game is at Santiago Canyon on Friday. The Chargers host Santa Ana on Friday.
